Nice to hear from CTEWheel and DiscDog! Unusual that both these fine gentlemen have no other favorite teams other than the Cards, as almost everybody else cited at least one other.....who was it......I think it was CardinalNationHouston who gave us about 5 other baseball favs. Other than maybe the Orioles, I really don't have another favorite either. When I first started following the game around age 7, I went on a team mailing rampage for about a year. Every Monday I would mail a letter to each team telling them how much I liked them and if I could please be the lucky recipient of some cool free stuff. The Orioles would NEVER fail to disappoint. Every week without fail I would receive a nice plump package stuffed with Oriole decals, a team photo and several individual photos of players like Boog Powell, Jim Palmer and Paul Blair......some of them autographed. It goes without saying that I amassed quite a large sum of duplicates, which came in handy as trade bait for baseball cards. How could Baltimore not be my second favorite team? They either had a myriad of different people handling their mail or one pretty darn forgetful one.
Speaking of baseball fans, I'd like to make a quick observation. Take a look in the mirror. If you can nod your head up and down to the question "have you only had one favorite baseball team your entire life", then you are a genuine and trustworthy individual. Any so called fan that I've ever met who has had two or more favorite teams in their lifetime, almost always prove to be flighty and not really reliable people. Oh and the ones who have had 5+ favorite teams!!!!.....forget about them as they most assuredly will one day have a date with ol' Sparky.....or did the great State of Florida do away with good ol' Sparky? On the other end of the spectrum, fans who have had their favorite team leave their city for another and yet years later still remain loyal to them are by and large super people. If any of you out there still love the AZ Cardinals after being gone from St.Louis for all of these years.......consider yourself not only to be a great sports fan, but also a great person as well.

BTW:  I've been a Cardinal Fan since 63 when I was about 8, the 60's were great years for the Cards.

My mother grew up a baseball fan, her favorite was Marty Marion.

My grandfather became a fan when he was hired by Gussie Busch at the height of the depression.  He worked for AB for 47 years.  He was a pretty terrific athlete playing Golf, BB, Horseshoes, Cork ball, Bowling, pretty much Golf and Bowling until he died.

So all in all I come by it naturally.

I submit into evidence DiscDogRob as Exhibit A as to the prototypical great baseball fan. I have this joker down the street from me who is the complete opposite. I kid you not, the guy sports only recent baseball and football caps atop his head who have been crowned champions......and has the gall to call himself a fan. I just saw him at the convenience store the other day wearing a Giants baseball hat after wearing his football Giants cap all summer. It absolutely turned my stomach last winter seeing him prance around in our Cards cap.......hey I just looked outside and it's snowing like crazy.

Pugs, I liked your post and it brought up a memory for me of my Dad.

He grew up in the coal mining area of Pennsylvania/West Virginia area and was
a diehard Pittsburgh fan as a kid and teenager.  After WW2 he ended up in Missouri and he gradually switched his allegiance to the Cards.  It didn't hurt that Stan the Man was from the same general area and about the same age and so he became a big Musial fan and for 65+ years he was a faithfulCardinal fan listening to the games on KMOX.  He still would always want to know how the Pirates did and followed them in the standings.  When the Cards played Pittsburgh it was always a little more intense for him but he always pulled for the Birds. Over time I believe he did make the total conversion to the Cardinal Nation and eventually the Pirates were just another team.  He passed away in February but I was so glad he got to see one more Cards World Series championship.

Thanks to my Dad I have always been a Redbirds fan but must admit that when I was little I admired the (1960's)Yankees because they were so good.  They kicked butt and took names. I always thought Mickey Mantle should of been in a Cardinal uniform.  When the Cards beat them in the 64 Series that was the greatest thing imaginable.  That was the end of the Yankee dominance for a long time.

My brother took my now 80 year old mother to game 6 of the World Series last year, she said it was fun, but she liked her champions from the 40's and Marty Marion and Stan Musiel also.

She also went to the Cards - Brown Streetcar Series as a girl

Re: New poster intro thread - Current Poster (re)Intro Thread

There generally are exceptions to every rule and that is certainly the case with CFlood's father switching favorite teams as a young man. It's quite obvious that there was not a flakish bone in his body. Growing up in the Pennsylvania/W.Virginia area says it all as far as toughness goes and being a Redbird fan for 65 years is a pretty neat thing. CFlood's dad gets a free pass as far as switching teams, but CFlood himself warrants keeping an eye on as he nearly succumbed to switching allegiance to the Yanks during the early 60's.......you never know, maybe if those Giants repeat in 2013, CFlood could be swayed???

Some great Cardinal memories, DuckSnort!

Wow! Northfield Minnesota. That should get some of our history buffs in "The House" thinking Ducksnort. Any relation to famed poster Duckymedwick? I love this thread and threads like these. Really cool to read the stories and the reasons behind the fandom. Seems like Cards fans are not random at all but seem to have a past thread to todays team. Uncanny!

GO CARDS!

Howdy, MrP!!! I think I speak for many in saying that you've been dearly missed. It is our sincere hope that your internet access issue changes so you can hop back on board at your old clip.
