It's hard to ignore the value of experience and the weight of what the front office has already decided on these guys who aren't getting a mention at all for the top prospect slot.

Are we looking at who has the most potential? Who is going to make the biggest impact on the system? Who will be the first to play in Busch? Who had the best season this year or over the last 2-3 years?

This would be a more valuable vote if we really knew what we are voting, IMO.

That being said, I'm going to hold off on a vote until I know that others are using for the criteria for their selections.

Al always..... banghead

RE: 2013 Cardinal Nation Community Prospect Voting Thread

Using the players included on Carioca's above list I will go with a top 5 of:

Rosenthal....doing it now
Miller....doing it now
Taveras....highest career-wise expectations
Adams....only one field position is a concern
Wong....I rate his 2012 season as solid or very good, but not "great".

Nice to have Carlos Martinez and Wacha in the pipeline.  No need to rush Tyrell Jenkins, let him get it right at a slow pace.

There really isn't any reason to vote for him either, but I will anyway.  Consider this my official vote for #1.

and best tools overall in the system right now.
IMO Taveras is the best pure hitter in the minors.

Matt Adams slash line at Springfield last year:

.300/.357/.566, 32 HRs in 513 PAs

Oscar Taveras slash line at Springfield this year:

.321/.380/.572, 23 HRs in 531 PAs

That is incredible really, all things considered.

Adams backed it up in AAA as well this year:

.329/.362/.624, 18 HRs in 276 PAs.

But dont forget that Oscar is several years younger.

My thinking on Taveras is that hitting well in the Texas League doesn't make him a lock.  Some guys keep right on going like Adams and some start tailing off.  I'm not sure how to tell which is which.

Also, he was kept at AA all year to work on and round out the rest of his game, I believe.  It all speeds up next year in Memphis.

I want to see what happens at AAA.

To be fair, he killed the ball at Quad Cities too.

The Cards org seems to think he deserved higher Milb level placement than Shelby did.

Even though his double A time was brief, he was dominate.  I don't have him quite as high as you but he definitely flew up my prospect rankings.

I think there's a pretty clear cut top 7 in the system, and then there'll be plenty of discussion after that.

I'm going to call this a little early for Taveras as he is running away with it.

Community prospect #1 is Oscar Taveras.

Voting is now open for #2.

I want to say how encouraged I am to see a lot of new posters posting and voting in this thread.   I hope you continue to vote through the full thread.

Despite Taveras in a runaway for #1 that is the most variety I think we have ever had in terms of different players getting #1 votes.

Voting for #2 will most likely close out by Thursday morning.

I have my first four as Wacha, Adams, Miller, Taveras.   So, since Wacha is still on the board, do I vote for him again for 2nd after having voted for him for 1st?

yes, each vote is independent.

At times you may find yourself voting for a guy who is not next on your list because just like any election you dont want your vote to go to waste.    Other times you will stick to your guns out of principle or with the purpose of bringing others around to your way of thinking.
