Injuries

Injuries

We are starting to pile up the injuries and while I know we have talked about them in a lot of different game threads (along with status, updates, and discussion), I thought maybe we could consolidate to one thread...unless anyone objects.

Carp, shoulder nerve issues, his return is anyone's guess? I remember him stating his shoulder was stronger than ever last season in interviews and stuff. He said how he did all these strength exercises for it and blah blah blah. Did he just not do them this past off season?

Linebrink, ?? I honestly don't know much on him other than he was shut down for arm issues

K-Mac, looks like his season is toast and maybe career. I feel for the guy and not to move on too early, but who do you think gets the call from Memphis and what are the corresponding moves? Shelby to the bullpen anyone? I think either Fick or Dickson get the call...or maybe Cleto.

Jay, separated shoulder, anyone know if this will be a minimum stay on the DL?

Craig, leg/hamstring, I think it was Austin who was vocally against putting him in the outfield quite yet...looks like you may have been right, but for the wrong reason. Unless you can argue a correlation between his knee not allowing his hammy to be in outfield shape yet. Minimum stay on the dl? I sure hope so as he was looking dang good in that 4-hole.

Beltran, knee/foot/feet...hmmm, maybe all those people complaining about our regulars not playing enough should ask the question, did MM play him too much in the early going?

Berkman, everything, I feel like he is kleenex just waiting to be blown out. I still don't know what he was scratched for but I assume it is the leg. I just hope with Craig and Beltran in their current states, that Berkman and MM don't over compensate.

Am I missing anyone? I really feel like Freese and Furcal should be on here too. Man those two need regular rest as well. This is just a really fragile team beyond Holliday and Molina.

RE: Injuries

We seem to be running out of band-aids. Who is still left to back fill if there are any more injuries?

Re: Injuries

well,

MI-Kozma has shown he can fill in defensively, so there is a backup at 2b/ss. not much offense though

MI/OF-Velez has MLB experience and versatility to play just about anywhere, plus he has speed. no power though

OF- who else could we really call on? Chambers is up already and i doubt. Hamilton?

1b-Matt Adams, woudl probably be rushing him and would take a Berkman injury or move back to RF for that to happen, which would probably mean Beltran is hurt too. woudl provide power though

3b-we haev so many options at MLB (Freese, Carpenter, Descalso, Greene, Craig in a pinch) i doubt we woudl need to worry, and if it came to needing Cox, we woudl be at a point where it woudlnt hurt us as we woudl undoubtedly be out of any kind of race

C-Anderson is our option at C even though he isnt hitting right now, Steven Hill i guess

SP-Dickson up already for pen
SP- Shelby Miller, woudl we truly push him up at this point?

RHRP-Cleto could come up for RH power pitching (control issues but this year seems somewhat better)
RHRP-Jess Todd, has MLB experience, even if it isnt great
RHRP-Adam Reifer, not as great as he was a few years ago (well i think he is...but the numbers arent great this year yet)

LHRP-Zavada coudl come up as a lefty and has MLB experience, but there is probably a reason he has been fishing for a job

Re: Injuries

I guess we can add Berkman to our growing list. Looks like Craig has his position after all. Get well soon buddy. Sounds like Adams will get the call in the mean time.

Re: Injuries

Don't forget Mcclellan.  He's important to our bullpen.  biggrin

I think everyone knew our success would be depended upon the health of the team.  Furcal, Berkman, Beltran are a bit brittle.  Freese and Furcal are surprisingly durable thus far.

Fortunately they hedged the aging lineup with some depth.

We just to focus more on balance.

The bullpen has been bad for a long time and their failure to address it unless there's a need on a playoff run is too risky.

RE: Injuries

One night after his crappy throws cost the Cardinals a chance to win, Furcal unleashes another bad throw to first that causes Berkman to lose his balance and come up lame.

Let's hope Furcal gets it together.

Re: Injuries

Berkman's had 2 surgeries on each knee.
I would be very surprised if he didn't tear something.

Beltran's knees are keeping him away from the game and he has no MRI damage.
I think Berkman's done for the year.

I wouldn't assume that quite yet. There are some lesser knee injuries. Let's hope for one of those.

I'd almost rather bring up Wong and Tavarez if needed. However that's not in my hands and we generally don't want to get the ML clock ticking on them too soon.

RE: Injuries

Berkman's comments are troubling. Does anyone else think he is questioning the future of his career or am I reading too much into it?

"If I’ve torn my ACL or something like that, I’d certainly get it fixed. But you don’t know how psychologically you’re going to come back from something like that. I’m not talking from the standpoint of being scared of hurting it again. I’m talking about doing everything it takes to come back and play again at an elite level. I think that’s a legitimate question I’m going to have to answer if, in fact, it turns out to be something more serious than we hope it is."

RE: Injuries

You are not alone. If it's an ACL, I think he's done. He's definitely done in St. Louis if it is an ACL.

I don't think we're gonna get good news on this today.

RE: Injuries

McClellan isn't done for the season:

Friday's examination revealed a strained flexor pronator and a small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, but the tear is small enough that McClellan believes surgery might not be necessary.

"We think there's a good chance of rehabbing it over the next few weeks and avoiding surgery," McClellan told FOXSportsMidwest.com in a text message.

McClellan described the findings as "good news" after thinking Thursday that a second Tommy John surgery might be necessary, which would have put him out for the rest of this season and part of 2013.

He will instead rehab the elbow the next couple of weeks and hope to avoid going under the knife like he did as a minor leaguer in 2006.

RE: Injuries

St. Louis Dispatch is reporting that Lancy Pancy has a severe meniscus tear. The article and comments still aren't all that promising. I guess time will only tell. Lot of miles on his knees.

RE: Injuries

Looks like we're probably going to see how good our minor league players are this year...I'll go now.............................

P.S.-Though in the end that could be a good thing given how short some our starters contracts are...

I just had an MRI and found out I tore my miniscus too.  Guess Berkman and I will be having a recovery time competition.

My goal is to be 100% again by bball season and also I was gonna run the Disney Marathon in January.  Guess we'll see~!

RE: Injuries

Well I might as well add the other Carpenter to this list. Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow if it is day-to-day or if it will require a DL stint. Not sure who would get the call if he does go on the DL. We still have a 40-man spot I believe so maybe Jackson? Maybe even Cleto for the bullpen to protect some arms?

Sadly, Cox might make the most sense.

Re: Injuries

Do we have room on the 40-man roster?

There's this guy, who we just signed last week, I think:

http://www.baseball-reference....id=romak-001jam

He's off to a good start with Memphis (8--for-19 with a couple of RBI).  He's really a Quad-A kind of guy but he is a righthanded corner infielder with a little pop.

I believe we have one more opening, and that guy seems to fit the profile of what is needed.
