Re: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors - 2012

Adding to that, Jose Iglesias was signed at 19 years old for 4 years/$8.25 million. He was considered a budding superstar in Cuba at the time, as well.

When you look at the history of Cuban signings, most of them don't look too bad. The trick, like with all Latin American players, is not getting fooled by falsified documents, and those issues seem to be getting cleaned up more and more each year, especially with these Cuban defectors.

I would guess with Diaz's age and his relatively low profile, he wouldn't cost much more than $3-4 million AAV for four years.

There is a spending limit of 2.9 Million between July 2, 2012 and July 1, 2013, and the Cardinals have spent 2.555 Million, so they only have 345 K to spend so don't look for them to sign Diaz unless there is some loophole around that. I don't know if a major league deal would be a loophole, but I doubt it. The Alex Reyes signing took 950 K.

In the end, his contract will be commensurate with teams' perceptions of his risk/reward.  If he has a high ceiling, but is 2 years (more or less) away from being MLB ready, he will be much cheaper than Cespedes and Solar. On the other hand, he may command more than some of the lesser known Cubans that have signed in the last year.

All I am asking is for the Cardinals to do their due diligence and be proactive on him.  Not recklessly aggressive, but competitive... if he has a higher ceiling than what we have in the organization now.

Cubans at least 23 years old with at least three seasons in a Cuban professional league are not bound by the new international signing rules. That is probably why Diaz is not signed. His 23rd birthday will be on January 8.

So how many international players have the Cards signed over the years?  I can only remember So Taguchi and Bill Ortega.

Not many.  I can only add Rene Arocha... a Cuban also.

I was trying to remember Arocha, but my memory bank kept coming back as Omar Olivares, which I knew wasn't right...

Nope - trade.  He was the key to the deal with Milwaukee in December 1980 that gave them Simmons and Fingers.  We got Lezcano, Sorensen and Green.

There was the young kid that St.Louis signed a couple years ago that had the scratched cornea or some type of eye problem. Forget his name. This seems to be an organizational thing as Cards are not even rumored to be in the mix for any of the Cubans. They seem to have no intrest in any of them.

You are thinking of Wagner Mateo.

I really don't understand the original question as the Cardinals sign more than a dozen international players each year.

My thought is really aimed at the Cuban players. St.Louis has had more involement in Latin America than before but are rarely mentioned in on the top Cuban guys. I wonder how Cuba succes in the international arena has affected the average fan's thinking on Cuban players? Are some of these guys over hyped (not saying Diaz) simply b/c they play in a pro type atmosphere?

The Cards drafted Cuban Amaury Cazana in 2006. He hung around six years but couldn't advance beyond Triple-A.

They spent almost a half million dollars on Cuban Ryde Rodriguez in 2007. He washed out in Class-A, playing last season in indy ball.

Not advocating this, but MLB Trade Rumors says 4 clubs are interested in Yunisky Betancourt. It doesn't say who the 4 are, but you have to wonder if one is the Cardinals. Anybody heard or seen anything connecting him to the Cards? History tells us they won't spend much on a utility infielder, so you never know.

Wouldn't that Ramírez contract justify the higher price tag on Diaz? Along with Iglesias, Cespedes, Puig, and Soler, these guys are JUSTIFYING the need to spend more as the Cubans are producing these days (or in Puig/Soler's case, are worthy prospects)

I bet every team in baseball would sign Diaz to that 4yr/$4.4M deal tomorrow, but the issue is that it will cost a lot more. The new rules also offer little room to improve via spending other than free agency so I think that will further increase Diaz's cost.

I don't think those players past success will have an reflection. Most of those guys hit free agency at a younger age than Diaz is. That meant they all had more time to develop.

Also, those players past success does nothing to change the risk in signing a player that with little scouting information. From all accounts, Diaz has not been mentioned as some sort of Cuban superstar like Cespedes was last year. I really don't see this guy getting some big deal and he's not going to get paid like an MLB veteran. There just isn't enough scouting on him to justify a deal like that.

The guesses are all over the place for Diaz.  The reason is precisely that so little is really known about him.  The GM's know a lot more than we know, I'm sure, but even they have less information than they would like to have.

My gut tells me he is at least an elite prospect, but possibly 1 or 2 years away.  If that was the case, it would actually work out quite well for STL.  I believe he could help Memphis win a title in 2013 and compete for major playing time in STL by 2014.  Again, that is just my hunch.  I can't wait to find out what kind of potential he actually has.

Question...  What would such a prospect be worth?

Well he has a workout in Mexico or some such thing on January 5th and he can sign with a team on January 23rd so we will find out this month!

Why does he have to wait until January 23rd?  His 23rd birthday is January 8.  He should be able to sign anytime after that.

Re: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors - 2012

After reading Greg Garcia's prospect ranking reports today, I wonder if the Cardinals have any interest in Diaz at all.

Personally, I think they still should consider signing Diaz if he profiles at least as high as Garcia and projects to stay at ss.  Although I am impressed with Garcia's double-A success, I wonder if he can stay at ss.

It seems that most middle-infield prospects in our system tend to begin their major league careers as back-ups for ss and 2b (and even 3b).  I can see Garcia doing that (possibly in 2014) as a back-up for Wong and our ss (Descalso, Kozma, Jackson, A. Diaz(?), other).
