Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors - 2012-2013
With 2012 almost upon us and the current 2010-11 thread like this one nearing its 100-page limit, it seems a good time to migrate to a new "Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors" thread for the new year. The 2010-11 thread has been moved to the Archives board where it will remain indefinitely and be easily accessible, pinned to the top of the board. The direct link to it is here. A quick reminder what this thread is about. If you have an idea for a trade or acquisition target for the Cardinals, this is the ideal place to discuss it. Same if you want to talk about a player in another organization or a free agent. On the other hand, we generally start new individual threads when a major media source connects the Cardinals with a particular player. At times, the moderators will merge new threads into this one if they are deemed to fit best here based on the preceding criteria.

According to mlbtraderumors.com , the Cardinals continue to listen on Lohse and Westbrook. I would be surprised if they pulled the trigger on either of those, but if they do, what would they be clearing payroll for? Another starter? 2B?

I think the feeling is that they would like to move Lohse or Westbrook so they can make an effort to sign Roy Oswalt. There's a risk, of course, given Oswalt's back, but I think the Cards want to have a guy as good as Carp and Waino to throw out there, especially if Waino's recovery doesn't go as well as planned or if Carp finally hits the wall after all those IP.

I would love to have Oswalt. Supposedly he is willing to take a one year deal. It is certainly worth a look if we can get rid of either Lohse or Westbrook.

I think they should make a run at Oswalt and keep Lohse and Westbrook. They wouldn't get much in return for either one of them, prospect wise, and they would have to eat a big chunk of the salary anyway.

Westbrook has an option for 2013 and is still a decent back of rotation starter. Some team might consider trading for him. About the best you could hope for is a couple mid-level prospects or pick up 2 or 3 Mil of his contract. He did win 12 games so he wasn't worthless.

The option is a mutual option so it really only favors the player.

Whats the plan with K Mac? I thought since we kept him and didn't non tender him meant we'd trade him. Lynn Boggs Romero Scrabble Sanchez Salas Motte McClellan 8 pitchers out of bullpen.

Trade Westbrook if you can get someone to take his salary (or most of it) and then sign Oswalt to a one year deal. A rotation of Carp, Wainwright, Garcia, Oswalt and Lohse is pretty darn good if healthy. If someone gets hurt you still have McClellan or Scrabble to fill in. Bring Shelby up in the fall and then he can replace Oswalt in the spring of 2013.

Boras shoots down idea expressed by Gammons, Strauss and others that Fielder might take a short-term deal.

A mutual option is often structured where the team has an option for a player (as an example) for a salary of $8MM and the player an option at $6MM. If the team declines it, the player has the option of playing for the lesser amount or becoming a free agent.

RE: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors - 2012
Was wanting to throw this idea around here. Not many people it on the other site I'm on. Lets say Oswalt really wants to pitch for us this year. If he signs for say 7-8 mil sigh him and let Lohse and Westbrook compete for the 5th starter spot. The loser of that competition can be the swingman. If they choose to stay we have 6 guys ready to start in case the injury bug hits. I'm also sure that they would wave there NTC if they aren't starting. I'm worried about the rotation. We hope Wainwright is back how he was but it's not guaranteed. Carpenter pitched so much last year I hope he stays healthy but if he isn't we need someone who can be a strogn number 2 to step in. I think Oswalt is that guy.

I would agree with this. Remember 2000, when we had a deep enough rotation by the end of ST (once Ankiel made the team) that we could afford to trade our winningest starter from 1999 to the Angels for some center field guy?

RE: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors - 2012
Someone over at vivaelbirdos posted a article asking if the Cardinals should sign Scott Kazmir. How much would that cost? With all the FA talk his name hasn't come up at all.
The thought is that Kazmirs main issue is he's not effecient with his pitchs trying to strike everyone out. If he's brought in as a LOOGY or reliever he doesn't have to worry about being efficent and instead just use his stuff to get lefties out. Maybe his MPH will jump going to relief rather than starting.

Also Pittsburgh is looking to contend this year and have some money to spend and want a starter. Why not try trading Lohse or Westbrook for a Starling Marte or Luis Heredia. Both are very raw but talented players. And Pittsburgh can get a good solid 3 in Lohse. This frees up money to sign Oswalt.
