RE: Former Cardinals sign deals
Other than thinking of him in association with our magical 2011 team, I'm really not going to miss Edwin Jackson that much. I just love that feeling of comfort when the Cards have that pitcher getting ready on game day that you know gives you a great chance for victory. I never really even had a hint of that feeling about Edwin Jackson in a Cards uniform.

The Pirates signed Brian Tallet to a minor league contract. He had been released by the Jays in early September.

Re: Former Cardinals sign deals
Jackson had early inning problems. If he got by the first two he was usually pretty strong. He went 5-2 after joining the Cardinals and 4-1 down the stretch. He did have that terrible game against the Brewers.

He did have that terrible game against the Brewers. Almost by design; that was the "take one for the team" game in which he went 7 innings, allowed 10 runs, and saved the bullpen. Absent that game, Jackson threw 71 innings for us after the trade, allowing 77 hits and 22 walks, striking out 45. He allowed 27 runs, 23 of which were earned, for an ERA of 2.92.

Re: Former Cardinals sign deals
Brad Penny's deal with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks is $4 million, plus $3.5 million in performance bonuses. That's $4 million in American dollars, not Yen.

Unless you are from the RatsBuddy school of professional athlete valuation, I don't think that clarification was necessary. $4 million is $3,950,000 over Rat's per-player salary cap. I've had some tough bosses when it comes to negotiating my worth and compensation, but I'm glad I never had to run up against RatsBuddy!

Jeff Suppan joined the Padres on a minor league deal. He spent last season at Triple-A Omaha (KC) and hasn't appeared in the majors since he left StL (the second time) in 2010.

RE: Former Cardinals sign deals
The Orioles have signed Cards 2003 2nd-rounder Stuart Pomeranz. He is now 27 and has never reached Triple-A. Pomeranz was ranked among our top 10 Cardinals prospects prior to both the 2006 and 2007 seasons before running into shoulder problems.
