RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
That's great work. I hate to add to your load, but is there any way you can break that out by position? (SP, RP, IF, OF, Goners)?

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
i could add their positions next to their names, and I might be willing to re-order them by SP/RP/IF/OF/C.
It won't be today though. I have already not worked too much at work today...even for my standards...jk

I think you can go ahead and put Mulder down for the buy-out, too, because there is no way they pick that option up. No hurry, though. Again, great work.

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
That's a pretty cool chart. To some that only look at the current years payroll i'm sure Mo looks at something similiar to this. The biggest thing that sticks out here is Albert in 2013 and what he's going to cost and build the team around that.Notice Lohse's contract is up when Albert's is up.I wouldn't look for any 4 year deal for a pitcher next year.Good post!

Re: Cardinals Payroll Table
-updated to correct salary of callups with regards to the % of days up with the StL vs total days in season. -updated to re-order players by position -updated salary of Wainwright's salary to include signing bonus in 2008 -updated Josh Phelps salary for 2008 -updated total for year 2008 (now total is over 103mil!)

Re: Cardinals Payroll Table
Great work again Jags.
It's too bad that $17 mil in the bullpen didn't go to better use.

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
What's sad is:
1. over half of our OF spending went to Encarnacion who didn't even get to put on a uniform this year. (6.5MM of 11.3MM)
2. almost half of our relief pitching spending went to Isringhausen who had a melt down this year. (8MM of 17.48MM)
3. almost half of our starting pitching spending went to starters who combined to start 4 games and pitch a total of 17 innings. (16.5MM of 36MM)

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
The good news forsch is that at least 2/3 (if not all) of that changes next year.

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
Quick estimates...
Assuming Wellemeyer, Ankiel, and Ludwick combine to $15MM, Pineiro and Kennedy are retained, one of Lopez and Miles are retained for $3MM, that totals approx. $86MM (with a few, 6, negligible league min. types unaccounted for if not upgraded--Mather, Schumaker, Rasmus , and a few of the bullpen folks).
That leaves approx. $15-20MM yet to spend (for a payroll in the $100-105MM range).
Trading Pineiro, Kennedy, and, I suppose, Glaus, could increase that number (although Pineiro and Kennedy would surely require us to eat some salary).
Could $15-20MM buy Furcal, Affeldt, and an incentive-laden deal to Brad Penny (retaining all prospects in the process)? Would that be adequate?

RE: Cardinals Payroll Table
I think it could get at least 2 of those 3.
The issue will be whether or not the Dodgers offer Penny arb. I doubt they will, but he is listed as Type B.

With Penny's injury concerns, I cannot imagine him getting more than $1-2MM guaranteed plus incentives. I would throw $1-2MM at him to see if he rebounds.

Re: Cardinals Payroll Table
I just noticed that other than an option on Franklin, the Cardinals only have 5 players (Albert, Carp, Waino, Yadi, & Lohse) signed for 2010 and beyond. That is a nice core, and they will have many more young players still under their control, but this seems like a lot of flexibility (or uncertainty depending on how you want to look at it) for the future.

Re: Cardinals Payroll Table
what i noticed right away was the excess of money potentially coming off the books after 2009...as much a deal as this years payroll alleviation has causes we have some big contracts coming off next year too...not to mention all fo the salary arb gusy we may not go to arb with again
Glaus-11.275 Piniero-7.5 Kennedy-4 potentially Franklin-2.75
that is about 25mil coming off next year's salary...and though we have raises due guys, we theoretically could only need to replace Piniero since Wallace or Freese might be ready for 3rd in 2010...potentially going into next years offseason just looking for one SP would be nice...makes me think we may only try to upgrade one of the middle infielder positions this offseason and fix the next one in 2010...a Miles/Lopez platoon at 2nd or SS woudl be fine for a year if we got an impact guy at the other spot...

It would seem a lot of that would be riding on the health of Carpenter.
