Re: TRADES/RUMORS/TRADE IDEAS - CONTINUED

If the Marlins really wanted to dump arb. eligible players why not try to get a KevinG regg/ Jeremy Hermida to replace Ankiel and trade Ank for middle infield help.

Schumaker and a couple prospects (Boggs? Solano? Anderson?) for Kevin Gregg and Jeremy Hermida.

Hermida will only be 25 in January and in 2007 he hit .296 with 18 HRs and an OPS+ of 125/OPS of .870. Of course like Ankiel he is injury prone, but he was a very highly touted prospect coming up and has shown glimses of stardom. I did read a discouraging report though that some say he isn't passionate about the game. Sounds a lot like J.D. Drew really.

Uggla will NOT be moved this offseason according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinental.

"

9:44pm: Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel was assured this evening that Dan Uggla will not be traded this winter.  Additonally, Mike Berardino says the Marlins won't be signing Ivan Rodriguez for a second stint."

Sure makes that deal with the Nats a bit odd.

CBSSports.com is reporting that the Rockies are acquiring Street with the intention of moving him to a third team. Could the Cards be the third team? I wonder what the Cards would give up for Street and Barmes.

This is interesting, but I don't know what I would be willing to give up in exchange for Street.  He just doesn't impress me that much.  What would they want for him?  I don't see him as valuable enough to warrant trading Ankiel/Ludwick for him.  Would they be interested in a deal built around Mather or Stavinoha?  We'll see, but at least Street would address an area of need unlike Holliday.

Edit:  After reviewing his stats, Street is growing on me.  Baseball Reference lists comps such as Chad Cordero and K-Rod for his performance by age.  That is impressive company.  His stats are at least as good as anyone currently on our roster can be expected to do.

I wonder if you couldn't get Street for a package of Schumaker and Perez/Motte.  This would give the Rockies an additional outfielder in their series of deals as well as a younger, cheaper RH arm for late innings.  Street is 2nd year arbitration eligible and was paid $3.3MM in 2008 in a one year deal that avoided arbitration.

Olsen is a psycho head case, Charlie.

He is also a fly ball pitcher with a serious home run problem.

I cannot see us being all that interested in him.

There are still others that will more then likely be traded.

Ricky Nolasco, Uggla in adeal to St. Louis needs to get done!!!!

The same deal I mentioned before

Anderson, Motte, Boggs, Ryan, Mather?

not enough to much, probably to much the way it looks.  They need to look hard into this hopefully he will, cause if either of these guys get traded for something the Cards could have matched, I think I may just jump off a bridge!
I cannot imagine that being enough.  Regardless...

I also cannot image the Cardinals trading for Uggla regardless of the cost.  He is arguably the worse defender in all of baseball at second base.  That would be a horrible match with how this team is constructed.  Putting him at second base in front of a rotation of sinkerballers would be laughable.

Nolasco would be worth looking into, but I see no reason to move him.  He isn't going to make a fortune or anything this year.  Has Nolasco ever even been mentioned as one of the players they would like to move?

Gregg would be totally worth kicking the tires on.  Hermida?  Meh...but I don't see us acquiring an outfielder...let alone a left-handed one...who was significantly outperformed by Skip Schumaker last year.

Now...give me Hanley Ramirez (and move him to the outfield, where he belongs) and I would be interested.

We know the Rockies wanted Ludwick. It sounds like they are going to spin off Street to another team. Wonder if they would trade him and Tulowitzki to the Cards for Ludwick and Boggs? That would satisfy a couple major Cardinal needs. The LH relievers are available via free agency from among Affeldt, Marte, Beimel, Embree, Rhodes. That would leave us with Anderson and a couple other prospects available to trade for a starting pitcher.

Ludwick and Boggs for Tulo and Street?  I would do that in a heartbeat.  I cannot imagine the Rox would even consider it (unless they feel like Tulo might never revert to 2007 form).

Re: TRADES/RUMORS/TRADE IDEAS - CONTINUED

I saw that the Padres didnt give Hoffman 4m to stay another year...he definitely would be a good guy to get for our closer role...im not sure if he woudl move out of the way and be a lefty specialist type of Perez or Motte come on strong like Fuentes might...but I think we coudl get Hoffman for less than 11m or whatever he offered himself to the Mets for...

It really looks like the Padres are shedding salary like mad...we shoudl take advantage and maybe we can keep Luddy and Ankiel...and still get Rasmus into starting lineup

Hoffman would be just fine for me to close out games...and who better to teach Perez and Motte closing than the all time saves leader... get it done Moz

Hoffman for 1yr at 7mil (2nd year option)
Affeldt for 4mil
Springer at 3mil (hopefully...incentive laden)
Reineker for a minor league contract hopefully (.5m?)
=14.5m
miles gentleman's agreement gets us a deal at 2mil
welle/ank/luddy arb at 5m each on avg
=17m

trade Anderson, thompson or Boggs, ryan, skip to Padres
for
K. Greene and M. Antonelli (or just skip and boggs for Greene)
=+5m,ish

trade Kennedy for whatever the Diamondbacks want to give pretty much if we dont eat any salary, if we eat some salary ask for a prospect who has stalled a bit in AAA...
=-2m

invite Marcus Giles to Spring Training
=N/A

payroll=66,195,000
+34m
=100,195,000

(then you can add in an opportunity type of starting pitcher for 5-10m if carp can't go, a veteran OFer that hits lefties for 1-2mil, or Hudson for 10mil if we can't get Antonelli)

starting 25 for 2009:
-Rasmus/KGreeneLH AnkRH/Pujols/Lud/Glaus/Ank or KGreene/Yadi/pitch/Ant or Miles or Giles

-Waino/Lohse/Welle/Piniero/Carp or FA (Randy Johnson?)

-Hoffman/Perez/Franklin/Springer/Affeldt/TJ or rheineker or manning/Motte or Kinney

-Miles/MGiles/Mather/LaRue/Duncan or veteran OFer (michaels?Taguchi?)

doesnt look to bad to me...and comes in right around 100-110mil
we have some youth at 2b with some veterans backing up the Middle infield...lots of pop, slightly more speed...rotation isnt fantastic, buth as guys that can get the job done (piniero is a fine #5)...Hoffman for a year is a good look..left side of the pen looks better...we lose a coupel of trading chips, but nothing too terrible

Not a terrible scenario but we need to do better at 2B.  In that scenario.  I'd keep Kennedy unless Giles actually far outplayed him in the Spring.

Interesting tid-bit from this article regarding the Holliday trade:

"As of last night, neither side was confirming the deal since it involved the completion of physicals, and it wasn't 100 percent that Street was included, though he had recently been dangled to the St. Louis Cardinals for Ryan Ludwick"

If Mo traded Ludwick for Street I'm guessing pitchfork and torch sales would increase 10 fold in St. Louis.

I agree, that would not be worth while.  If Ludwick is traded, then we open up the need for another power bat.  Right now he is the clean up hitter.  I don't think Glaus or Ankiel swing a good enough bat for the #4 spot.

Ryan Ludwick had an OPS of .966 (and an OPS+ of 150) last year.  That was fourth in the NL to Pujols, Chipper, and Lance Berkman and ahead of Holliday, HanRam, Wright, Utley, Dunn, A. Ramirez, Braun, Howard, Soriano, Fielder, Beltran, Burrell, etc.

Who does have enough stick satisfy you in the 4 spot?

I don't know what the future holds, but Ludwick sure had the bat last year - having the 6th best OPS in MLB last year.

I guess he doesn't make enough money, huh?

Just say no to Uggla. This guy is a horrid fielder and does not fit the Cards needs in my opinion. Terribly overated. Street for Ludwick is not going to happen in fact i am not sure why we would want that crumb in the first place. Roger Clemens attitude with Joel Pineiro stuff. No thanks! GO CARDS!

Agreed Nathan! I think we missed the boat on the Holliday trade. I am still not sure why there were so many posts against this deal because i think he would have resigned in St.louis once he saw how great a baseball city St.louis is and he recieved his first world championship ring. Then the NL would have had to deal with a Pujols - Holliday combo for years to come. There will not be another hitter like MH traded this offseason. While i think Luddy is an improving player and we could do a lot worse he is not the big bat that we need at cleanup IMHO! GO CARDS

I would hate to think this was actually considered, howerver think about what izzys contract was when he signed it....imo closer is overvalued in mlb...
