I'm convinced by is upside, despite the injury risk, to go with Jaime Garcia at #7.

Boggs hasn't missed a start in 3 years. He gets my vote for #7

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
Richard Castillo #7. When an 18-year-old starting pitching posts a 2.37 ERA across 2 levels of full-season A-ball, something special is going on. And there are many other positives beyond Castillo's 2008 ERA.
1) He was also terrific in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2007, with a 1.72 ERA.
2) Castillo pitched well in winterball last year.
3) He has solid velocity already (88-90 MPH), and figures to get at least a little stronger, given his youth.
4) In his 13 starts for Quad Cities, basestealers pilfered just 3 bags in 10 tries. So it's fair to say he has no trouble holding runners on.
5) Castillo struck out better than 8 men per 9 innings this year.
6) His strikeout-to-walk ratio was better than 3-1.
7) He finished this year very strongly, posting a 1.99 ERA over 6 August starts (41 IP, 36 K's, 8 BB's), and didn't allow a run in his last two outings, covering 15 innings.
So there's all that. But here's the clincher:
In his 13 Midwest League starts (79 innings), with the bases empty Castillo allowed batters a .245 average, and a .457 slg. %. Nothing special about those numbers, right?
But how about this: with men on base, batters "hit" just .191/.269/.245. (94 AB's)
Or this: with RISP, Castillo allowed .146/.226/.167. (48 AB's)
Yeah, with runners in scoring position, MWL batters *slugged* .167 against Castillo. That's just
So it's 18-year-old Richard Castillo for me at #7.
Hey, RC, sorry if that was excessive politicking.

Bob GREAT info, as usual. Very impressive numbers especially: BobReed wrote: with men on base, batters "hit" just .191/.269/.245. (94 AB's)
Or this: with RISP, Castillo allowed .146/.226/.167. (48 AB's)
That's amazing, the anti-Reyes.

This is post of the week type stuff here. This guy was barely on my radar, and here's an informed guy telling me he's a top 10 prospect (ahead of Garcia and Boggs). That put a smile on my face. I don't vote in these things because I wouldn't know what the heck I was talking about. But I love this thread. Keep up the good work, all.

Garcia but then I would pick Castillo Bobreed is right the guy is awesome and somethingg very special is happening because this guy is showing results at a ridiculous age. So much so they made him a starter this guy is one to watch.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
I like Boggs and I remain an ardent supporter but Boggs projects what we thought a solid 4th starter and innings eater who seems capable of holding the line against major league hitters. he won't wow you but he gets the job done. Despite the injury setback Garcia is likely a number 2 starter in the future and will probably be with the Cardinals soon after returning from injury. Castillo is doing phenomenally and while its too erly due to fact he will probably need to fill out and sort out his mechanics as he goes he has incredible upside possibly more than any other international prospect we currently have and if he makes it to double A should be in our top 3 minimum. 18 year olds who do extremely well as relievers in high A and great as starters in the midwest league should be in top ten and there are few systems where they wouldn't. Boggs should be in the top ten but probably 10 rather than lower than that.

RE: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
Word is Adam O, is still having the fastball command problems mentioned earlier in years past, This is not control but command of his pitches and ability to set things up the way he should. Which is why he started to struggle with his control against better competition. This was mentioned by redbirdinsight which is why he always thought he would be in the bullpen. I think all pitchers should at least go to double A as starters and get slowly converted later on since to me it teaches them more how to pitch. its far easier to get away with sloppy command and secondary pitches even for years as a reliever. I think as Ottavino learns he could overcome his command problems but if not I see him as being a closer prospect on par with perez perhaps higher though there is no reason to rush him. His stuff profiles well as a starter and if he has to he would be a devastating closer. I would rather have starters than relievers but part of this to take what you can get and go after the next one. The more I analyze players the more I think organizations need to continually expose and work on various weaknesses of prospects certain people I suspect get called up too quickly and have their weaknesses hidden at the lower levels only to figure out that its a whole new level. hence Daric barton need to adjust to the major league level and his exposure as needing to develop more power at his position. Its a lot easier to fix these at the lower levels than the majors.

I'm convinced by the Garcia arguments. He's my #7.
Boggs, Castillo, and Freese are very close.

Freese #7, said to have a good glove and gotta love .306 and 26 hr in his first year of AAA. Just wish he'd have gotten a callup, especially when Glaus went down.

RE: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
Seems like Garcia will be winning #7, but BobReed really brought Castillo into perspective for me. I was thinking that Freese or Boggs would be my next couple guys, but Castillo seems like a higher potential pitching prospect than Boggs. Boggs is consistent and I think he may be a younger version of what Looper has given us this year in the future. So while Boggs is consistent, he doesn't wow me like I want a top 10 prospect to wow me. I can't wait for the debate on #8-10, this should be a fun group to debate.

RE: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
Garcia is our #7 prospect.
Voting is now open for #8.
My vote for #8 is Jon Jay. .845 OPS (including .906 at AAA) while battling injuries all year. definitely a ++ glove man. It looks like f he may be capable of an .850 OPS in the majors which as a CF which will make him an an all-star player.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
Motte --- He is pitching better than Perez. And he has been in some tough situations at the major league level. Tony trusts him. 4 2/3 innings, 8K's, no earned runs. Averaged around 15 K's per 9 innings at Memphis. Still developing a slider he is blowing people away with the heater.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List
He has no secondary pitch. All it is is a pitch with a few MPH decrease and no movement. One game this year he came in (I believe vs. the Marlins) and they sat dead-red and hit at least three consecutive off of him, scoring a few and sealing our fate.
No, I don't think Motte deserves to be anywhere near the top ten. He will not be an effective career reliever until he gets AT LEAST one more pitch.

Freese is my #8, but I'm looking for anyone that can convince me that I should not have Boggs and Castillo rounding out my top 10...
