2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

Ok everyone, I guess I will try to moderate this thread with the help of Cards13 until someone more energetic and more qualified steps up to the plate to take over.

For those of you new to the Birdhouse let me explain how this works.   This is I believe the 3rd year that the community has developed their own end of season prospect list.  It is a "top 50", well, because that's what we decided on at the time.  It is different than the "top 40' list that is put together by the Birdhouse staff in that this is done by a community vote.   The process is basically we start with choosing the number 1 prospect and after approximately a 48 hour period we will tabulate the votes, declare who the #1 prospect is and then repeat the process in choosing the subsequent prospects.   People are free (even encouraged) to cordially editorialize and try to influence others as this has the effect of educate all of us about the particular merits of a prospect.

The first thing that must decided is the eligibility.  In the past we have used the rookie eligibility criteria of less than 50 innings pitched, less than 130 at bats, and no more than 45 days on a major league roster (excluding DL and time in September).  It appears BA and the PD are not using the 45 day criteria for their lists and since it has become common to compare lists, I think we should be consistent with them.  This really only affects Chris Perez this year.  We can easily change later if we misundestood what BA and the PD are going to do or for some other reason.   If anyone disagrees with this change in criteria speak up quickly.

The other eligibility question that could theoretically come up is that of Haerther or Wasdin who will be eligible for 6 year minor league free agency at the end of the year unless placed on the 40 man roster.  I will declare them eligible on the off chance someone wants to vote for them.  If they make the list and then are declared free agents they will then be removed.

Any other player who is released or traded after being placed on the list but before we reach #50 will simply be removed and all those below him will move up a spot.   In the case of a player being acquired before we reach #50 we will hold a vote on where that player will be ranked and insert him in with all others moving down a notch (similar to what was done with Barton and Freese last year).

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

I'll open the voting for this year #1 prospect by casting my vote for Colby Rasmus.

Voting will be held open for approximately 48 hours though I reserve the right to close it early if it appears a consensus has been reached.

Enjoy!

Despite his rough season at AAA, Rasmus gets my vote here. I saw him while he was struggling this year, and even at that point he looked like a major leaguer in comparison to his peers. His swing is lightning fast through the hitting zone, and he is an excellent athlete. Colby is going to be a fine ballplayer, and still the best bet in this system to be a "special" player.

I voted for Colby but there was a question in my mind.  I seriously considered Perez.

I would say Colby as long as his Dad stays out of the picture and let's him progress and mature. Colby doesn't need to read on here regularly that he is not good enough to play for the Cardinals.

Rasmus

Is Mather eligible? Perez not eligible on the 45 days issue?

Unless Perez becomes Papelbon or Rivera, a closer just doesn't have that much value to me.

For me, a well-rounded all-star centerfielder >>> all-star closer.

He is a clear #2, though.

Here is my prediction:  4 of the top 5 will remain the same (albeit in a different order).  Ottavino will drop and Todd will jump in.

No kidding.  RC is just frank...which is curiously refreshing.  He simply thinks Colby wasn't very good this year.  Coupling that with solid ML OF play and a belief that TLR is tired of fielding Colby questions (and, therefore, somehow against him), RC just thinks he'll have to pound the baseball in order to find his way onto this team before next September.  That is not unreasonable.

I don't have to agree with everything he says to know that he does believe Colby is more than good enough to play for the Cardinals (deserving, ready, and good enough are different things).  I think that is part of his frustration with Colby's 2008 season.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

I think Colby can make the team out of spring training next year but he has to really have a good spring. Most likely scenario is that he will go back to Memphis for a partial season. When he has nothing else to prove there they will bring him up to work his way into the Cardinal outfield picture.

"Colby is not good enough to play in St. Louis but he is good enough to play somewhere else, it is that simple.  Thats as detailed as I can be with you.  But I agree he won't be going anywhere."

That is what you are referring to, I take it?

I wouldn't take that so literally.  There is a ton of backstory that is well documented on this board.

Colby will be fine...and he will be a Cardinal.  His dad knows it, too (even though it is almost surely correct that he would be starting immediately on many other teams if he were to be traded).  He just needs to play his way onto the roster and things will take care of themselves.

I may be wrong, but I wouldn't be too worried about it.  The last sentence in the paragraph above is all that really matters.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

On the topic of eligibility, Kinney should not be considered. He's just a young guy that had some massive injury bad luck who also happened to be a hero for the 2006 WS team. Had he not been injured, he would not have qualified for this list anyway, so don't penalize him twice (missing out on playing and being overlooked for importance.) Given the way our bullpen has been this year, no one can argue that he would not have been a mainstay this season had he been healthy.

Re: 2009 Community Top 50 Prospects List

I'll be the first to give my vote to Perez as the #1 prospect.

Also, when we're done with each day, can somebody tabulate up all of the votes and then list them....that is, who had the most, 2nd most, 3rd most etc?

Drive by......

Expect More!
