Re: need to designate Masterson

You want to designate Masterson????

Last year he was an all-star.  Statistics indicate that he has been somewhat unlucky this year and he was on the DL until the trade.  I know he has not been good most of his time with the Cardinals but he doesn't need designated.  That would be like the Cardinals designating Allen Craig instead of trading him because he was hitting only .237.  Or designating Matt Holliday on April 11th because he was only hitting .214.

I think there is still something wrong with Masterson.  I don't know if it is an ailment or just mechanics.  The Cardinals would be best off by resting him for awhile and letting him get straightened out.

Besides, the rosters expand next Monday.

I would suggest, though, that depending on what happens on Saturday, we could see Masterson demoted to long relief beginning next week.  Which was kind of the plan anyway, since the feeling was that he wouldn't have been in the postseason rotation anyway - not with Wainwright, Lynn, Lackey and either Wacha or Miller likely to get the postseason starting assignments.

Sheesh, a new thread based on a knee-jerk reaction that makes no practical sense.

Nothing knee jerk about a guy that has stunk up the place in every start but one for the Cards and wasn't any better in Clev....

You want to take him out of the rotation? OK, I can see that. You want to dump him for nothing? That is knee-jerkiness at its best. Use the next month to see if he can fit in a bullpen role. It is not like the team is overrun with effective RH relief options. Rosters expand next week so he is not taking away a spot from someone else and his salary is already sunken cost.

Maybe the "knee-jerk reaction" was making that lousy trade in the first place.

OK, I can see that criticism too. At this point, the trade looks like a bust.

The dopey demands to get rid of every slumping player are what get tiresome to me.

I call this part of the Steinbrennerization of fandom, in recognition of his old habit of banishing guys to the minors after a bad game - or even a bad at-bat. There's at least one case, documented in "The Bronx Zoo", where ol' George ordered a guy sent down before he'd even left the mound.

Ah, Steinbrenner.  Before owning the Yankees he owned the Cleveland Pipers of the ABL and once fired his head coach during a game at the half.

Re: need to designate Masterson

sure, I think we could let him continue to pitch
(until his brains are kicked in.....)

Masterson's ERA is ~~ 7.56 (over 7 for the cards)...his velocity is in the 80's consistently

I'm not sure I'd trust him with long relief...
he's on the 40 man roster....(a spot)

we'll hope for better, but the Cards have zero room to work to make the playoffs...
every start needs to be a "quality start"

anything else?

nough said....

Maybe 2014 Masterson will become another 1929 Howard Ehmke?  Or maybe a 2006 Anthony Reyes?

It wasn't too long ago that Lynn was the one folks wanted to get rid of.

Is his ERA probably going to be over "8" after HIS next start?

Didn't think so.

Re: need to designate Masterson

It appears to me that has pretty nasty stuff. The key is command that you can expect to be off some after a stint on the DL. The one good game he pitched his command was very good and he was almost unhittable.

On a different note, Siegrist seems to be getting back to normal. He blew Fresno away last night in two innings. His velocity was clearly off when he came of the DL and command was missing as well.

It does get a little tiresome reading posts wanting to get rid of any one who goes 0-4 a couple of games.

His stint on the DL probably had no adverse  impact on his command after he was reactivated.

He had mechanical problems back in camp and while he pitched s few decent games for the Tribe his mechanics were inconsistent the entire time he spent with the Tribe this year.

When the issue of his knee first came up Francona scoffed at the idea it was Masterson's knee causing the problem/  The truth of the matter is if his knee was effeting his mechanics he would have been diabled sooner  --  when a bad knee is affecting a delivery a team runs a risk of a pitcher injuring his arm if he pitches.

Mastersoon was diabled because the Tribe wanted to send him to Columbus where he could do extra work on his mechanics do some rehab starts.

Re: need to designate Masterson

I heard the Indians General Manager (GM) interview on XM Ch 89 (radio/satellite)

and they (Tride) knew of his issues and  he was having problems when they sent him
to the Cards (of course that is why you make a trade)..

If Wainwright struggles again today, we might have wished we gave LHP Cooley a start before Sept....

we'll see who the Sept call ups include.....

not looking good....to advance
