What does it say about a team that is 9 games above .500, yet has a -5 run differential.  Are our Cardinals simply incredibly lucky or is the team full of "grit" and determination or is the coaching staff more crafty than the opposition and are able to get more wins out of substandard performances or is it something else entirely I'm not considering?

The Yankees are the only other team with a negative run differential (-40) and a record above .500 (+2).

Last year we had a huge positive run differential, but at this point in the season only had 4 more wins than we have now.

You are correct. Shame on me for trusting the Cardinals media notes without verifying. I will update the main post to cut down on the confusion. Thanks for pointing it out.

Those three recent blowouts, especially the two in Baltimore, kind of skewed things as far as run differential goes.

A quick tally shows the Cards have been outscored, 41-31, in their last 8 games - but the W-L record in those games is 4-4 as two of those games were the two Baltimore blowouts, in which we were outscored, 22-5.  In the six games since, we've outscored the opposition, 26-19, and won 4 of 6.

Since the San Diego 12-1 blowout on July 30, we've played 16 games and been outscored 77-63, but have gone 9-7 in that stretch, since the three blowouts constitute a 34-6 composite score.  In the other 13 games in that span, we've outscored the opposition, 57-44, and have won 9 of 13.

That's how blowouts can skew things.  But the bottom line is - we may have lost those three games by a composite score of 34-6, but they only counted as three losses.

Is it raining in St. Louis?  The Weather Channel has showed a lot of green stuff in the St. Louis area all day.

It didn't start at 7:15 PM CT either.  The cleaning lady must do the media guide when she's not doing the depth chart. wink

More Peralta. He drives in Adams from first with a double to put the birds up 1-0, then Taveras hits a double over Almonte's head in CF, now 2-0.
