MLB off-day thread - Mon 8/4

Another off day for St. Louis, so here is another open thread for miscellaneous Cardinals topics.

I nominate "Allen Craig's foot" as a topic for discussion. I don't know the nature of his current injury and if it is related to last year's, but after much speculation that Craig never really was healthy I'm sure there is a brewing conspiracy theory as a result of his absence from Boston's lineup due to a foot problem.

Saw Wagner Mateo was released by Dbacks today. You may remember him signing a 3.1 million internation signing contract in 2009 that got voided due to issues with his eyesight. Never made it past high A with low batting averages and poor ERA in a few pitching attempts.

I never understood this deal from the start. Why would any organization give a 16-year old that kind of money?

I mean, how many kids did we know growing up who were absolute athletic studs at 14, 15, 16, 17, even 18, and then went off to college and became average or maybe pretty good still, but did not get drafted.

While running over first base Craig hurt the same foot that he hurt last year but Boston is saying it is not the same injury despite the similarities. He hasn't played since his first game in Boston and his status for Tuesday is uncertain.

Craig had to pass a physical for the trade to be valid. If the Red Sox unearthed any inkling of an existing problem, you can bet they would demand something - to invalidate the trade or at least get more in return from the Cardinals. Boston would have the opposite motivation of participating in an injury coverup.

For the record, I personally wouldn't entertain any thoughts of conspiracy. Boston is confident his present condition is unrelated and they obviously didn't have any reservations about Craig's health when they acquired him. But the overall discussion of Craig's health and age is only going to grow louder considering the coincidental circumstances of this particular ailment.

Why would Craig keep this quiet? He was having a bad season and it was getting worse as the season went on. I don't know Allen Craig but he seems to be a smart young man.

Man, what a nightmare season for Craig. I'm sure he wishes there was a "reboot" option in life and he could start this year over.

He seems like a good guy. I hope he recovers from these problems and can get on with his career as a productive player in 2015, if not this year.

The day the trade happened MLB Network said that Craig was not healthy all season.

He may be healthy enough to play but he might not be as healthy as he can be.

That seems accurate as he just never has put anything together this year. A fully healthy hitter of Craig's caliber would have started to put some numbers up by now ala Holliday.

It was similar with Pujols. He never seemed to be totally healthy after signing with the Angels until this year. He's around a .770 OPS now, which is not vintage Albert but that's probably about all you'll get from a 34 year old with recent injury issues.

Freese though, man, 6 homers and 96 strikeouts in roughly 300 official ABs. Man, that's brutal.

That's worse than Rasmus, who has 14 homers and 90 Ks in about 260 ABs. Colby is hitting .219, so he's evolving into one of those "Rob Deer/Mark Reynolds" types that either homers, or does not do much else.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are expected to place center fielder Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list. Injury is a result of retaliation for Paul Goldschmidt getting hit. Wow.

The NL Central Division race is now missing Yadier Molina, Joey Votto, and Andrew McCutchen. Sad.

At .251 BA Freese is out hitting Wong .243, Taveras ..220, Bourjos .219, Cruz .239, Ellis .190, Descalso .177 and Robinson .140.  In other words, he's out hitting 7 of our 12 position players, and only 2 points behind Peralta.

I believe he is out OBPing and out SLGing 7 of our 12 as well.  Talk about brutal.

I don't feel sorry for Craig at all.  After all, how many $MILLIONS OF DOLLARS$ does he already have at the age of 30???

Yes but he earned it. He was a solid contributor for the Cardnals and the club felt that was his value.

Yeah, that's rough. Our offense basically stinks. But the only true comparison is Freese and Wong, as essentially Wong replaced him. I don't think anyone would trade Wong for Freese.

Yahoo Sports/MLB says McCutchen might miss a month.  If we are ever going to make a move in 2014 now is the time!
