says it'll be for an mlb ready outfielder and pitcher.  Lackey is having a good season pitching in th AL East and remember he has a crazy team friendly contract for '15.  he'll only earn $500,000, now that's value!!!

guessing it's piscotty and cmart.

I really don't like this at all. We sold low on Craig, he would still be around if Matheny could have just listened to Mo. Also like Kelly more than Lackey.

i didn't hear a lot of love last night for kelly when he was getting roughed up by the worst offense is baseball.  best of luck to him and craig in boston, but lackey is a very good pitcher.  and that contract, wow.

crazy to believe, but lackey will make less than kelly in 2015!!!

The Sox are also sending a minor league player with Lackey. No word on who yet.

Its kind of hard to say good-bye to Craig and Kelly. Craig was awesome last year and II always liked Joe Kelly. IMO Boston got a pretty good return for a 35 year old pitcher. I hope they call Pham up from Memphis now and not Robinson.

My Thoughts:

Joe Kelly - actually glad to see him go.  He's got some ability but that acting ignorant all the time sort of wore thin on me.

Allen Craig - hate to see him go.  Just having a bad year.  I wish him the best.  Hope he rebounds in a new environment.

BTW, will Kelly and Craig be with the Red Sox when they come to Busch next week???

while it's hard to give up the memories of kelly and craig, as players they were both below replacement value this year.  i hope they both bounce back and have great careers whenever they aren't playing us, but we got a very good AL pitcher, making league minimum next year for players providing negative value to us.

Re: Cardinals acquire John Lackey from Red Soxs

Is Lackey's option still valid in the event of a trade? And are the Cards paying any of Craig's salary?

Craig and Kelly were very happy to be part of this organization. And Craig was a major part of our incredible run since 2011. He will be dearly missed. The Cards must believe that he was not going to regain his form though. If Boston is paying his contract and Craig can't return to his former glory that could look to be a very ugly deal for the Sox. I liked Kelly, who looked great at times, but his inability to keep guys off the basepaths has always been a concern. I can tolerate losing him before Martinez or Miller, who I still think have higher upside.

lackey's option is valid, and the sox are sending us $1.75 million.

From Derrick Goold on Twitter:

Sense around #Cardinals right now: stunned. Players, including ones dealt, are just stunned. #stlcards
Memphis Mafia -- Freese, Craig, Jay, and Descalso -- reduced to two via trades in past nine months. #stlcards #cardinals

Who would have thought Jay and Descalso would be the two left of the MM?

It looks like Kelly could start against us and you have to figure Craig will play. That's going to be weird. Especially considering how these guys all faced each other in the World Series.

Re: Cardinals acquire John Lackey from Red Soxs

It's uncertain if Masterson will be able to be that innings eater that is guarantee with Lackey. But if healthy remains with both these pitchers we've got a deep inning eating rotation under Wainwright, Lynn, Lackey, Masterson, and Miller then Wacha if he's capable of returning without setbacks. Obviously to win games your gonna have to score but playing Taveras everyday will help if he catches on to big-league pitching.
