Counting on Waino to get this series off on the right foot.  It would be great to take two out of three.

Need to sweep to take over first place.

Re: 2014 MLB game #108: Cards vs. Brewers: Fri 8/1

Another big series with the Brewers. Important to note: this is our last series with Milwaukee until September, when we play then 7 times! Any sweep for either team could be huge here, but a 2-1 split either way maintains the status quo. I think our new rotation will help us surpass the Brewers in August, then we can put them (and everyone else) away in September.

Good match up today, and I can't wait to see our new pitcher tomorrow.

Peralta has really shut us down this year and is carrying a nice hot streak into St. Louis. After some bumps in the road this season I think he has turned out to be a really strong starter for Milwaukee. This pitching matchup isn't as lopsided as some might think.

I'm guessing Gerardo Parra could get a start for Milwaukee tonight. Although it's not the case this year, he did crush us last year. He and Aram both seem to have some Cardinal killer in their blood.

Raining in StL. Lineup: Carpenter, Wong, Holliday, Adams, Peralta, Pierzynski, Taveras, Bourjos, Wainwright.

Would much rather see Jay in CF than Bourjos, unless Peralta is a lefty.

Really? Bourjos is a better CF than Jay. You want to see Jay put him at the corner positions

Jay can hit.  Our offense is so anemic we can't afford to have him on the bench.  The difference between the two defensively is marginal anyway.

Have you seen Jay's offensive numbers in July?? and defensively there are not even close!

Re: 2014 MLB game #108: Cards vs. Brewers: Fri 8/1

Not that Matheny has really followed a great strategy or pattern, but generally I expect Jay to play behind ground ball pitchers and Bourjos to play behind fly ball pitchers; also considering the ballpark. Bourjos may start today for Waino and Jay may start tomorrow for Masterson and again for Lynn on Sunday (if Lynn still starts).

The point being: Jay's perceived poor defense (which I still believe is overstated) is less of a liability when more of the batted balls are staying in the infield.

For what it is worth, this will be Bourjos's third consecutive start after only two previous starts in July. Maybe Jay has a boo boo.

It appears Matheny is sending a message this weekend, as Lynn was bumped to insert Lackey on Sunday. So the two hired guns we just acquired are going to start two of the three big games this weekend, with Waino starting tonight.

uh... no.  bourjos isn't in the same hemisphere as jay defensively.  there's a reason that even with bourjos struggling offensively that their WAR is virtually identical (.8 for bourjos, 1.1 for jay, with Jay having more chances/AB's)

i think they wanted to avoid lackey vs kelly in st louis on tuesday too... that would have been more than a little awkward.

Good point. It works for multiple reasons. Seeing Kelly pitch against us Tuesday will be tough too.

I'm ready for this series. After all the debating of the big trades, I'm ready to go forward with the roster we have. Waino is on the mound against our top division foe right now, so let's go play ball. We seem to play up or down to our competition, so I'd expect a strong effort this weekend.

How come guys named "Willie" (or "Willy" or "Wily") never spelled it the traditional W-i-l-l-i-e way anymore? It seems like anytime a "Willie" comes up today they either spell it like this guy (Peralta), ala Wily Mo Pena, or W-i-l-l-y like Willy Taveras.

What's traditional depends on where you come from, I guess.
