Per Peter Gammons:

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

The piece the Indians are reportedly receiving on the other end is Cardinal outfield prospect James Ramsey.

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

Hmm thought we had enough SP on the DL as it was....

And not sure trading Ramsey for a pitcher who stinking up the place this year was a wise decision.

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

i like the trade.  we trade from our surplus of minor league outfielders, get a pitcher who is a year removed from being very good, and he is a free agent at the end of the year.  we get a quality 2 month rental and don't have to give up anything that hurts.

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

masterson is set to come of the dl friday, and will most likely start saturday for the birds.

there is no room in stl for ramsey.  we bought low on masterson, not a lot of risk in this trade, but plenty of upside.

if there weren't a solid of history of pitchers coming to stl and getting better, or getting back to their career norm, i'd be worried.

i'm excited and happy with the trade!!!

Seems like their hoping Masterson becomes the '14 Cardinal version of Jeff Weaver. People may think trading Ramsey away was a slight overpay but from watching him the last two seasons the guy is nothing more than a below-average regular on the Indians to 4th outfielder.

Bought low on him with a top OF prospect...not smart move

Was Ramsey ever gonna see the big league with the Cards? They get a pitcher with some upside while not paying thru the nose..   If they like Masterson who knows IF they will try to resign him..

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

Add in who knows if Masterson will even be better than what they have right now in the rotation, his numbers don't look like it this year, sure is a big over pay for at most 11 starts for a guy in reg season.

I think this is a great move. You got a potential upgrade without giving away the farm. how many years in Masterson signed for?

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

I worry we might be getting damaged goods here. Masterson simply put, has been terrible this year. On the upside though it's low risk high reward. Wonder if a big bat is coming our way too now, since we still have all of our trade chips to deal from.

Re: Justin Masterson trade thread

This surprises me!  A lot of people are saying that this is it for the Cardinals at the deadline but I am not so sure.

Masterson's fielding independent ERA is a little over 4.00 so that is a lot better than his 5.50 on the historical ERA.

If Wacha makes it back, that makes six starters and if Martinez is counted among the starters, that makes seven.  That is why I am not sure the Cardinals are done dealing.

You and I differ on what's a 'top OF prospect'. Pham is, doing what Ramsey is and at a higher level. And HE isn't likely to get the call.

If, Ramsey was to be traded, this is about what he'd bring. Unless as a supplementary part of a much larger package.

So all Ramsey is worth is a pitcher who stinks right now and is injured and cards get control for another 2 months....it is not his fault the Cards won't promote him....

Jake Westbrook's ERA the partial season with CLE before the trade was 4.65. As a Cardinal, 3.48.
