Subtraction by addition?  When you find yourself in a hole, it's best to quit digging.

What else could be done? The Cards are not  giving up prime prospects to get Suzuki who'll be on another club next season..and will be a backup in Sept.

Cruz is not a MLB hitter...period.So we got a "hitter" in AJ and a glove man in Cruz...if only Matheny could make it work!

This will not be a season management looks back on with fond memories. The personnel decisions are getting more and more baffling.

He used to hit well, but I don't know about this. Maybe the club thinks it can tame him and fit him in. Seems like a significant risk.

AJ has not hit all year and I don't see him hitting here at all either, the guy is a classless dirt bag that the Cards should NEVER even considered....

Re: A.J. Pierzynski thread

Actually I think it's the opposite. He's going for players that won't cost much, hoping they can give us a marginal boost to get into the playoffs. He's not paying big for any major talent, which is what I would consider desperate for a team with this much talent already on it.

I agree with most of the sentiment expressed here.  I  am very surprised that the Cardinals did this.  It does reek of desperation.

The only way I can think of this positively is Mo decided he couldn't give up more prospects for Suzuki because he was going to send a bunch to Tampa biggrin.  Beyond that, I think this was a mistake and I wonder how the clubhouse is going to react to it?

I think this should end the Peavy speculation because AJ didn't exactly endear himself to the Red Sox pitchers or their clubhouse.

Re: A.J. Pierzynski thread

I never thought Price was plausible, and definitely don't now that Tampa is winning. I only see some big market team like LA getting him because they'd give the house to Tampa. Clubs like ours won't risk that, and probably can't.

But you're probably right about Suzuki. Actually, what Mo did after Yadi got hurt seems pretty logical. He quickly signed Kottaras for cheap after he had been DFA'd to fill the backup spot until a better opportunity could be had. The plan was probably a) Suzuki, and b) Pierzynski. In terms of talent/experience, this is a good move, but it's the attitude stuff that has people worried.

I think if Shelby is okay tomorrow, we'll stand pat with Waino, Lynn, Shelby, and Kelly, and hope that Wacha returns in September and Yadi can return for the playoffs. If they don't, we probably fall short. Management can probably live with that due to the ridiculous injury problems we've had this year. But I don't see us overpaying for Price, and I think if they were comfortable with Peavy then we'd have him by now.

If Shelby stinks tomorrow, they may get Peavy and hope that helps some. I'd be fine with that, but wouldn't get all excited about it.

Re: A.J. Pierzynski thread

This move just baffles me. This is the last guy you want in a clubhouse filled with young players. Anyone who listens to 670 The Score knows what a detriment he was to the White Sox. His nickname there was Satan and it was widely reported how free the players felt after he was gone. Peavy particularly had issues with him. He provided nothing for the Red Sox this season and was empty offense for the Rangers last season.

I really hate seeing this guy associated with this franchise. It is going to be hard for me to cheer for this team with him in the lineup. I wonder if this is a Matheny suggestion. He seems to be shifting into an annoyingly old school, bullhead manager who wants to push against young players. This is the exact opposite of why he was hired for this franchise. I'm happy Mo isn't selling off talented prospects for rentals, but if they are going to be bad I would prefer it happen with young guys getting a fair chance to develope (yes, at the big league level) like Tavares. It's so frustrating to see a team with a lot of potential being managed by a guy who is proving greatly incapable of the position.

Re: A.J. Pierzynski thread

I don't get why they didn't sign him too start off rather than putting a claim on Kottaras. Beats me but perhaps playing with a different club in contention with playoff aspirations will change his attitude towards his new peers. We do know something he is a fierce competitor and wants to win that's why he has always rubbed opposing players the wrong way.
