Kurt Suzuki trade thread

Joe Strauss is among those talking about the Cards potentially acquiring catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Twins to help cover while Molina is out. What do folks think?

Re: Kurt Suzuki trade thread

Suzuki is having a career year offensively and his value has never been higher.  He is also a FA after this season.  The Cardinals would be trading for him for about nine weeks of work at the most.

Minnesota has two places to go to trade him - STL and Baltimore.  As is always the way with trades, it is about the acquisition cost.  I have know idea what the Twins would want but my guess is that because of the time of the year, it would hurt some.

Finally, I guess the team needs to assess how much better Suzuki is than Cruz.  He is no doubt better, at least right now offensively,, but how much better is the important question.  .Cruz as a rapport with the pitching staff that would take Suzuki some time to achieve and remember that Suzuki will only be in STL a short time.

Re: Kurt Suzuki trade thread

What do I think? I think Joe Strauss is the worst. But I'm guessing you were asking about the catchers.

Tony Cruz has thrown out 14% of attempted steals this year. And he's batting .192/.263/.250/.513 since the beginning of June. Those are real problems. Meanwhile Kurt Suzuki is batting .321/.370/.386/.756 in almost 100 more AB's while throwing out 23% of steal attempts. That looks pretty nice to me. By comparison Suzuki's bat even looks better than Yadi's this year, who is having his worst season at the dish since 2010. Although Suzuki is playing way above his career averages this year.

I really like Tony Cruz. As usual I think he is better than his reputation with fans. He is personally very close to Yadi and this pitching staff. Plus it's very clear how much he is valued in the clubhouse. I wish I had faith that Cruz would get hot and just be good enough to get us into the postseason so we can get Yadi back. But as each day passes I'm seeing that as less and less likely.

So, Suzuki makes sense. He's no doubt a pure rental. But even when Yadi comes back (assuming we play long enough into the fall that he does in fact come back) Suzuki doesn't lose value. He's still a decent bat to bring off the bench. I think he would be a solid addition. You just have to hope his hot year continues in St. Louis and that he doesn't turn back into the Kurt Suzuki of years past.

Re: Kurt Suzuki trade thread

It would be a no-brainer move if the price is right. Suzuki has more prolonged experience as a starter than Cruz, and is obviously hitting the ball well this year. The word is that the Twins are unlikely to re-sign him anyway, so while they will want something for him, you have to wonder if they'd risk getting nothing by asking for a ridiculous price.

Re: Kurt Suzuki trade thread

I think what i thought the day we recieved the bad news on Molina. Go get Suzuki. This is a very good catcher and i am surprised he is not here already. Actually with Moz at GM i am not surprised. Twins probably want one of their precious prospects and he will end up elsewhere while Cards march on with one of the worst catching tandems in recent memory. Cruz has never and will never hit a lick, he is just not capable of anymore than back up duty. After starting out strong he has regressed to his usual atrocious offense. The other guy is as bad defensively as Cruz is offensively, i honestly laughed at first when i heard whom they had signed. What a joke!

GO CARDS!

Tony Cruz is not the problem that ails this team. Why give away prospects for a nine week guy? Don't want.

we do need a bench bat when molina comes back... if the price is right he's probably worth it.

This team needs some things besides a catcher.

The Cards never use the back-up Catcher as a bench bat.

We need somebody who is OK defensively, with an OK arm and who wouldn't be as much of a black hole at the plate as Cruz.  The guy would have to either be OK with playing once a week after Yadi is back, or who will not be here after this year.  Mo seems to be looking for somebody he can get for nothing, but those kind of guys have value so they cannot be had for nothing,

The alternative is descalso.  carry 3 catchers, not much of a difference.

people are in denial at how bad our bench is.
