2014 MLB game #103: Cards at Cubs: Sat 7/26 (rotation change)

Shelby Miller (7-8, 4.25) vs. Jake Arrieta (5‐2, 2.12) 3:05 p.m., FOX Sports Midwest and KMOX.

With Miller's return to the rotation, Martinez is moving to the pen.

Me TOO Pads!

Sitting in the silly bleachers with my stinking Cub friends.  Id rather sit behind the cards dugout, but its a cub friends birthday  that we are celebrating at the game.  He wanted bleacher seats so I will have to suffer through.  cool

Sweet. I'm doing bleachers too. I've never sat there before. I usually get rooftop due to corporate tix from a friend. (they are 'cutting back' on the tickets this year limiting it to in the park only or something)

Got a sweet deal from Megabus (free!) so I'll be enjoying my trip immensely financially.

I don't get the rotation change. Miller got a bit of rest I guess, but he looked as bad as ever last time out. He followed Martinez and Motte and 3 of the 5 he faced reached base with a single, a double and a walk. Maybe the idea is to not let Martinez think he can hold down a rotation slot with one weak outing after the next.

It has become apparent that no one is stepping up to fill the hole in the middle of the lineup left by Yadi. Neither Craig nor Taveras are showing a pulse. I know Taveras has not played everyday, but it is up to a rookie trying to break in to take advantage of his opportunities and play his way into the lineup. Make a case for himself in other words. He hasn't made an impression.

It seems like Mo is content to have Mike continue rearranging a bunch of tattered three legged deck chairs as the ship settles lower and lower.

I'd rather see Carlos Martinez out there than Miller.  If Carlos could just avoid the walks, he seems to be "getting it" little by little each time out.  He's got that electric stuff but at age 22 is still learning how to pitch.  One day he will, and when that day comes he's going to be dynamite IMO.

I'd rather see Miller out there than Senior' Carlos. Ha, ha, Martinez can't avoid the walks and his location sucks.

Miller sucks-tomorrow is a loss.  I hope Wainwright can avoid the sweep on Sunday.

I agree with you for the most part, but I have a guess as to why Miller is returning to the rotation: they don't trust him in the bullpen and can't simply sit him and let him get rusty. They have to try to get him back in there. What I don't understand is why Martinez is going back to the bullpen, leaving a spot open in the rotation, unless the expectation is to soon add a starter for the rotation. I still think that's likely based on these moves.

Let's hope Shelby gets going again, because right now our rotation, which looked phenomenal for three months, is looking rather pedestrian unless/until Miller and/or Kelly can get it going again.

Redbirds got a break late last night.  The Mets score three in the 9th to beat K-Rod and the Brewers 3-2.  Lucas Duda a line drive two run homerun that was the big blow.  Plus the Pirates were routed by the Rockies in Colorado.  And the Reds continue to fade, they've lost seven in a row now.

What a guy wouldn't give for a hot streak now, winning about 7 in a row, and 9 out of 10.  I am wondering how the tough loss last night by the Brewers might affect them?

Both Miller and Martinez have been inefficent to bad in their time starting. Shelby gives you nothing that Martinez gave. If this is a developmental move and Martinez goes to Memphis to get straightened out for a playoff run I'm good with that. If this is just him to the pen to be the long man again. It's a poor decision.

But people are hung up on hitting in yesterday's game... when you score 6 runs against a scrub team, if you are any good - that should be enough for a win.  The pitching staff gave up 7 runs to a last place team. #FireLilliquist

Conversely, Martinez gives you nothing that Miller gave. Martinez was good for two innings max, he is not ready to be a starting major league pitcher. Lots of folks big on history and track records here, How many games did Shelby Miller win last year, just axing??excited

Meanwhile, Grichuk slammed his 19th dinger of the year for Memphis last night and Gast has now allowed three earned runs over his last 23 innings.

Here we go. Let's see how Shelby looks. He and Martinez have to feel less pressure now that Peavy is out of the picture, as they probably won't lose spots in the rotation now (assuming Martinez still has a shot to work back into it in August).

Another good start. Adams hammers in two runs and we work Arrieta for about 30 pitches in the first inning.

shelby gets 'em 1-2-3 in the first.  still too many balls, but a nice job to follow up a couple runs with a zero.
