Looks like Arizona and Baltimore are double winners.

So you said, but why? From where are the other picks coming? Please explain. Thanks.

The Cardinals fared very well.  Tampa Bay and KC were very unlucky.

Oops!  Not.  My bad.

They were in the list who moved on to the 2nd round (1) and then they were chosen from the larger pool  in that round (2).  My brain didn't process this before I hit "Post".

Agree. The Cards have improved every year. First year, they were among those not drawn, like TB and KC this year. Last year, they were in the second-round group. This year, St. Louis is third in the first-round group.

I don't think it is possible for the Cards to get a compensation pick in next year's draft since we won't have any qualifying FA's... unless I am missing someone?

It is true and I thought about that as I wrote it, but decided to be complete since the article was intended to be both a general tutorial and 2014 Cardinals-specific in focus.

P.S. I decided to alter that sentence to render the point specific.

I think the Cardinals get an extra third round pick because they didn't sign Meagil (sp?) this year.  If I have this clear n my mind, the Cardinals should have five in the firs hundred picks.  A 1st, 2nd, 3rd, extra 3rd, and the Competitive Balance Lottery pick.  Is that correct?

Yes, that is what I wrote in the referenced article on the home page - all except for first 100. It could be up to 110 or so through the third. Impossible to know for sure now, but as a point of reference, Megill was 104 this year.

You are correct, but that extra 3rd round pick will probably be in the triple-digit range (approx #105-110).

Theo neglected to mention that the Cardinals are in one of MLB's 10 smallest markets.

What a surprise. A large market team dislikes a tax to help the smaller market clubs. Quite the news flash.

As the Cubs team president (one of them!), Theo is making himself look foolish. He and the other clubs put the Competitive Balance Lottery in place and are the only ones who could initiate change to it. Whining to the media accomplishes nothing.

Re: Cards Benefit in Comptetitve Balance Lottery

Of all the teams that could complain about this the Cubs are about the last who should comment. The Cubs choose to be basement dwellers the past few years. It wasn't something that was thrust on them and if his rebuild works they are going to have a ridiculous advantage over other teams, because their revenue isn't going to go anywhere so they can add high-priced free agents and re-sign guys to stay competitive.

Theo didn't say that the Cardinals shouldn't get the pick, just that they don't need it.  Would they not be competitive without it?  Highly unlikely.

One set of wealthy owners complaining to the public about rules that advantage other wealthy owners is unbecoming.
