MLB off-day thread - Mon 7/21

You know the drill. With no MLB game Monday, this thread is for small topics not worthy of their own threads.

Re: MLB off-day thread - Mon 7/21

I have one that I think highlights the unique culture of winning in St. Louis.

Let's compare with our Missouri neighbors, the Royals. There's a team with plenty of talent. They looked pretty good against us and have shown some flashes of brilliance this season (they dominated Detroit a few weeks ago in a series). They have maybe the second best catcher in the game besides Yadi, an ace starting pitcher, and plenty of young talent. But after taking the division lead, they've wilted so far in the season's second half.

What's the difference between the Royals and Cardinals right now? Both have very good pitching, although the Cards had more pitching depth in the rotation. Both have good bullpens. Both have talented lineups under-producing. The difference, I think, is simply knowing how to win in crunch time. The Royals are 10-18 in 1-run games, and they always seem to wilt just when they earn the spotlight. They simply don't know how to step up to another gear and make the playoffs. A lot of teams do not. The Cardinals do, and that's part of our culture of winning. And it's the continued experience and expectations of winning that help this franchise stay competitive year after year.

That's something we shouldn't take for granted and should enjoy.

Maybe we can get some help from the Dodgers this week at Pittsburgh.
July 21Edinson VolquezHyun-jin Ryu
July 22Vance WorleyJosh Beckett
July 23Francisco LirianoDan Haren
Meanwhile Brewers and Reds lock horns.
July 21Mat LatosWily Peralta
July 22Homer BaileyJimmy Nelson
July 23Mike LeakeKyle Lohse
After this series, Pirates have a 10 game swing west vs. Rockies, Giants and D-backs.

Brewers have four at home vs. the Mets after this series with the Reds. Early next month, the Brewers must face in succession, the Cardinals, Giants and Dodgers.

Play Bourjos more?  Why in the hell?  Because he hit a homer?

on another topic, what's the timetable for getting Wacha and Seigrist back?

Seigrist should be back very soon, he's already pitched in Springfield a few times.

Wacha's going to start throwing in two weeks and the time table (as of now) is early September..... which isn't all bad, if this team gets into the playoffs, we all know what a fresh Wacha can do in October.

Reds down 5-zip to Brew Crew in the sixth. Dodgers are late in the game with a 5-2 lead over Buccos. Brewers have ruffed up Latos.

Map has been saying play Bourjos all year. I heard they were encouraged by Wacha's X-rays today saying it looked much healthier and he could (could) start a program in two weeks. I have also heard on the radio here that Siegrist is Very close.

Because he is an excellent defensive player. Because he brings speed as a weapon. Because he is improving offensively. In short he hasn't been given a chance to play on a regular basis and he deserves it.

I could see him getting more playing time from here on out actually. Jay has finished tired and played poorly in the field late in the year before. I do agree that if he starts to hit finally he could push Jay to bench which should be a good thing for JJ going down the stretch. That is best case scenario for the club so i think PB will get another shot at it soon. Matheny has a bad track record  for playing some of his starters way too much so that is a concern for me. I worry more about him blowing up a relievers arm like he did with Mujica last year though.
