Martinez is starting for us. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he start a game against the Dodgers last year and get knocked around a bit? I'm just trying to remember.

Anyway, tough task here against Kershaw, who shut us down earlier this year. We did beat him several times last year, though.

What's Wainwright doing this weekend, cleaning out his garage?

Maybe Mike has him in the doghouse for stinking up the All-Star game.

Mike probably figures since Lynn has only one less win than Kershaw he must be almost as good, so he can be our new #1.

No, this is outrageous on Matheny's part.  Unless I'm mistaken, Wainwright pitched ONE inning on Tuesday. That means he's had Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to rest.  He absolutely needs to be the starter on Sunday, especially against a team as good as the Dodgers.  Trying to sneak through this series with Kelly and Martinez is insanity.  If you've got a horse, you ride him.  banghead

I'm okay with it. Wainwright is on pace for 233 innings this year (4th highest in the league overall). That's quite a bit after throwing 240 last year plus another 35 in the postseason.

We need him to last for four more years after this one too.

Yeah, i have to agree. He deserves a break. Even though he pitched just one inning i doubt we have any idea how mentally stressing that whole thing was.

GO CARDS!

+1
I agree that Waino needs an extended rest. If the offense doesn't show up any better than it did last time vs. Kershaw, it would be a wasted start for Adam.

Oh, please.  What if poor, overworked Wainwright had to pitch back in the day in a four man rotation?

I take it you missed the news today that the Cards are moving to a four-man rotation that includes Wainwright and excludes Miller.

Let's look at some actual information.  I think everyone would agree Wainwright is our best pitcher.  Well, this "best pitcher" threw about seven innings last Saturday and one on Tuesday in an exhibition game.  In essence, if he pitched tomorrow he'd have had about 8 days off.  Sunday's game is against the Dodgers, one of the NL's best teams.  If you can't use your horse under this set of conditions, something is really screwed up.

Back in those days, Waino would have been out of baseball by now due to elbow injuries when he tore his UCL at age 29.

Players like Adam, that have had serious surgery, wouldn't have still been pitching. Therefore, you comparing a "horse" these days to one back then is a little silly.

Then maybe mm should consider pulling him at 7- 8ip with 100-110 pitches pitches every now and then

I agree a rest would be nice but so would sweeping this series...which we have now conceded to dumb luck or a windfall

You might be conceding but Matheny isn't. You probably had us losing to Haren and Grienke as well, how could we have possibly won those first two games? A rest for Waino here is more important than a sweep. If Waino came out and stunk it up today Matheny would get blasted for something. Cardinal fans are greedy and unrealistic at times. We are off to a great 2nd half start, I'm thrilled with 2/3 vs LA if we lose today, but I also think CMart may just shut the dodgers down through 7 and give us a shot today.

Thank you for posting this. A couple of years removed from major arm surgery and apparently some want to have him pitch himself back to an appointment with Dr. Frank Jobe. The Cardinals have won this series already and why take a chance throwing him against Kershaw and losing when the odds are he can be a winner on Tuesday.

Reds lost 3-2. They were swept by the Yankees.

They should be ashamed.  Swept away by a half-ass team at best--and I think the Yankees have a losing record at home this year.  Oh well, it helps us.

Anybody see the final play?  Aroldis pitching to McCann with a runner at 3rd and one out.  McCann hits a high popup into very short rightfield.  Bruce, Frazier, and Schumaker all converge and nobody takes charge.  It falls and the Reds fall with it, 3-2.

Probably Schumaker's ball to take charge on.

Grayssports, you don't get it regarding Waino.  He needs that ninth and tenth day of rest to get ready for the Cubs.  eek
