Correct me if i am wrong, but doesnt the starter typically pitch two innings?  And then the other pitchers just one inning?

Irregardless I believe Matheny is going to give the nod to Kershaw.  And either way, we will see him Sunday night in St. Louis.

Wainwright and King Felix officially named starters. Good for them.

Without looking, does anyone remember who started last year? I readily admit that I don't.

Likewise to Kershaw. Matt Harvey was the NL starter last year and was chosen over Kershaw. You likely don't remember because Harvey went down with Tommy John later last season and is just now rehabbing back.

Probably what will be the most exciting about these next two days. Will no doubt be watching Giancarlo Stanton tear up Target Field in the Home Run Derby tonight. As like every year it's on ESPN with Boomer calling all the shots.

I don't remember - but I do remember that Bob Gibson made his only ASG start in 1972, and Rick Wise (!) was the NL starting pitcher in 1973.

You're right, though - the starting pitchers only go one or two innings these days; it used to be three.

Historical note: in 1933, Lefty Gomez started for the AL and Mr. Mack had him go six innings.  A lot of guys never got into the game; Mr. Mack told them flat-out before the game that not everyone was going to get to play because he wanted very badly to win this first All Star Game.

Historical note II:  I see, looking at ASG box scores, that Jim Bouton pitched an inning in the 1963 All Star Game.  For all the books he's written, I don't believe he's ever mentioned that fact.

If I had to guess I would say Matheny gets 1 inn from Waino and then goes to Kershaw for 2.

My primary point is that this week, it is a big deal who is starting this exhibition game, but in the long haul, it is pretty close to irrelevant.

Re: 2014 MLB All-Star Game: Tue 7/15

Costas talked some about the all star game on the MLB broadcast of our game against the Brewers Friday night. By the way, that broadcast was pure enjoyment.

First of all, you had a great comeback by the Cardinals. Then you has Costas on play-by-play, who is great. Then for the last six innings of the game, Bob Uecker sat in with Costas and they had a conversation going the entire time, some of it humorous of course, and some serious.

The only disappointment to me was that they never touched on the Cardinals 1964 championship, which of course Uke was part of - at least not that I heard. With all of the ceremony about the 50 year tribute that the Cardinals have had, I was hoping they would talk a little about it and some of Uke's memories. They did show a photo of Uke catching balls in a tuba, which I believe was before one of the '64 World Series games so maybe they spoke more about it then, but I did not catch it as my step-son and his girlfriend stopped by around that time and they were talking with my wife while I was trying to watch the game. biggrin

So anyway, back to Costas and the all star game, he called it a game of conflicting goals, which is a great way to summarize it. The winning league gets home field in the Series, so there is motivation to win. But then there is also an emphasis to get everyone involved and each team needs to have a player represented.

The tuba was the highlight of the Series for Uecker - he never got into a single game.  McCarver played every inning of every game.

Wainwright getting pounded in the 1st.  Already 3-0 AL and they are still batting.  Kershaw probably laughing in his glove.

Doubt it ! There good friends.

I'm sure nerves played a part. It was a thankless assignment for anyone with all the drama surrounding Meter.

Hahaha!biggrin

This old news around these parts my friend. I'll give him a Mully seeing as it's an all-star game and chose his guy to start it. Still it was 3-3 at one point.
