George Kottaras claimed by Cardinals after Yadi's injury

George Kottaras claimed by Cardinals after Yadi's injury

Kottaras was previously DFA'd by the Cleveland Indians. In a small sample size of ten games with them he hit: .286/.385/.714 with three home runs and four RBI. He should be able to provide an upgrade offensively over Cruz especially with the power and OBP aspects but definitely will not be an upgrade over him in the game-calling and knowledge of the pitching staff. A good move for a back-up and depth for the time being.

Not a bad acquisition. Lefty bat with some pop. With Milwaukee he always seemed to do fairly well as a part-time guy.

A lifetime .216 hitter, but with a .741 career OPS and 32 homers in 713 AB's. Strictly a backup, but a nice addition. OTOH, he has only thrown out 19% of his baserunners over his career.

Basically he's going to play about 3 of every 10 games.

Do we need to make a 40 man move?

Relatively good move here, IMO. I've watched him when he was with the Royals, and he can hit. His defense isn't going to help us, but he cost us little and gives us some experience and a bat while Yadi is out.

Probably be Butler to 60-day if we do.

Yes, a 40-man move will be required, but I don't think it will be Butler.

Maybe Siegrist

and I think J.Garcia to DL-60 to make room for J.Kelly

If Kottaras catches Shelby we might as well just let all the base runners go on over to third.

Yuck! Another terrible addition by Moz. This is getting really old with the bench guys this guy adds. Strike out machine that is a pretty bad catcher as well, can't throw either. I don't expect him to be around long.

Unfortunately, Buster Posey wasn't available, Matt Wieters is out for the season, and Joe Mauer doesn't catch any more.

Perhaps they do what they did with Kelly. But really don't know if Siegrist has been out all that long. Siegrist is projected to start up rehab assignment tomorrow night in Springfield with that said.

The move to make room for Kottaras was O'Neill being DFA'd. With glut of outfielders ahead and O'Neill numbers basically dying from last year because of shifts and teams pitching hard inside in on him have caused batting average to suffer. Should get a chance just because of his career high OBP and walk rate.

I am going to guess some one is going to claim O'neil. The chance to add a guy that has a .400 or so OBA even if it is mostly at AA for free is a no brainer. I was shocked when i heard on the radio about this atrocious dumpster diving move by Moz. They aren't really going to let this guy catch are they? They would have been hard pressed to find a worse defensive catcher than George but maybe he hangs around as a hitter and emergency catcher when Moz acquires an actual catcher. Might be nice to have some power off the bench as long as he never puts the gear on. Just brutal. eek1eek1eek1 I see the media is picking up on my Molina/Molina idea i have had for two years now, i have seen several writers speculate the same thing. The important thing to me is Jose is one of the top five or six defensive catchers in the game. He is not as good as his brother but is still a fantastic catcher. With all our young pitchers it is borderline incompetence to let Kotts catch here. Once again i have no idea what Mozeliak and his scouts are looking at in this player. Better than that jerk from Boston but still a really bad player. This is a tough one to accept and is pushing me closer to thinking the front office of this team has no idea what they are doing. I have to believe this is a temporary panic signing. Easley would have been a better choice IMO and they should just set Perez free. It is obvious they have no plans for him just like Butler, Castro and O'neil.

I was surprised Ortega didn't get the removal over O'Neill. This is the move- I'd imagine involving a catcher if Kottaras just doesn't cut it.

We badly need a healthy Siegrist back and pitching.

Would be nice of course, but Freeman has done a good job. Greenwood and Maness have looked good too, until today when they sort of "took one for the team".

DT, Ortega is 23. O'Neill is 26.

CNH, you guessed wrong. 29 other orgs passed on O'Neill. A good reminder that we tend to overvalue the prospects from the organization we know best.
