Looking forward to tuning in to this one.  Pirates and Reds start an hour earlier so i'll catch a few innings of that one.  McCutchen really saved the bacon for the Pirates last night, along with the throw to home by Polanco to save the game.

Anyway, hope the Redbirds continue with the offense.  Would be nice if Taveras can start smacking the ball around too, that would help.

By the way, what happened to Pugs???

If we win, we will be in sole possession of first place at the break. If the Dodgers also lose, we will be tied for best record in the NL.

Do you guys think Wainwright will start the All-Star game? He threw less than 100 pitches yesterday.

My guess is Kershaw, then Wainwright.

No manager, including Matheny, would go against one of his own guys (Wainwright) when the choice is so close.  Wainwright will start the AS game.  That is the reason Matheny pulled Adam yesterday after 7 innings.

Should have pulled him after 5. The reasons are obvious.

No Taveras in the lineup?  Can't say I like that.

It could have been worse considering that this is a BIG getaway day game. wink

Matheny will never learn, and Craig will probably stink now that his Achilles heel has been exposed all over the internet. (inside heater) banghead

This was Carlos's 6th start so I was thinking he should be more settled in.  His last start went down hill pretty fast too IIRC.  He and Shelby both are showing how being successful in the major league is about much more than good stuff and a live arm.  They need to find that out for themselves I guess.

Maness came in with a bucket of gasoline today.  Good time to get Motte some work, lets see how he does.

Re: 2014 MLB game #96: Cards at Brewers: Sun 7/13

This game has turned into a letdown after the last two, but we're going to be in relatively great shape at the break even with a loss here. It's not over - we did come back from down 6-0 Friday - but the Brewers look like they're returning the favor from yesterday.

I think Martinez's struggles today again underscore the need for a veteran starting pitcher to add depth in the second half.

Well, there's another one, 7-1.  Motte needs to stop the bleeding.

Motte's velocity is coming back, around 95 today.  He seems to be able to locate well most of the time, but not as reliably as he needs to.  I think he's pretty close, but pretty close is not going to work as a late inning guy.  He needs to press on and show gradual improvement.  It is possible he could be back to his old self 6 weeks from now.

Re: 2014 MLB game #96: Cards at Brewers: Sun 7/13

Soft tossing Maness and Greenwood must have pin point command and an umpire with a generous strike zone in order to be successful. Greenwood is not long for the roster though so he will be gone if Siegrist is ready.
I really believe this team still needs to add a bat in the worst way. Craig is now 3 for his last 22 and showing no signs of rebounding anytime soon. This game is a real bummer heading into the All-Star break, but hey, two weeks ago, Cards were 6.5 out.

The Brewers are making pretty good contact and everything is falling in or finding holes.  They aren't really teeing off, though.  Not that it matters.

Now its Greenwood's turn to serve 'em up.

There's Ellis messing up a routine chopper to third with a double clutch and bad throw.  One of those days.
