How about this lineup?

Posted: 5/5/2014 6:34 AM

How about this lineup?

Taveras in right, Grichuk in center, Carpenter back to second, and Craig at third.  Adams 1b, Holliday LF, Peralta SS, Molina, C.  I don't know how much 3B Craig has ever played, but teach, teach, teach; Oquendo is right there to be the professor.

I don't think the start of May is a good time to be teaching someone a new position, especially third.

Re: How about this lineup?

If Craig could still play 3B, he would probably be there. He played it primarily in the minors with LF and 1B coming in next.

Craig's play in RF has disappointed me this year. He seemed to be a lot better at playing out there in the past, but he is really slow. He has the 3rd worst range of all RFers so far (in front of Torii Hunter and Bautista) so that's not what I was expecting.

Matt Holiday and Jon Jay are also, again, among the worst defenders at their respective positions too. Bourjos, of course, is among the best so far.

Allan Craig has about as much chance of playing third as Matt Adams.

BTW, Carlos Beltran is much worse than even Craig with a -22.1 UZR/150 this season in RF after posting a -18.7 UZR/150 last year. (Craig is at -16.8 UZR/150)

Craig isn't going to play 3B this year. Because Adams is hitting so well, Craig is likely to lose playing time when Taveras comes up, especially if Grichuk continues to also play well.

I am surprised you do Taveras is not in center.

Thought this would be right up your alley, Nate. But then who am I to condescend two fine gentlemen such as Brosky and Nathan? Especially with one of the two being blessed with an IQ almost as high as the 2014 Cardinal team batting average. Desperate times spawn desperate thoughts. Yes we are only in May, but many times desperation isn't all that bad a thing. Countless heroic feats have come to fruition during times of intense desperation. Just this past Friday while trout fishing near Missoula, I just couldn't get the notion of having Matt Adams leadoff for a few games, out of my head. If you really think about it, it's not all that bad an idea.

5. Peralta C

7. Carpenter LF
8. Holliday 2B

You're a funny man, BuckNut, but your batting order isn't necessarily that obtuse. At the risk of being overly long winded and thus losing our audience, lets quickly examine the first two slots in your batting order, shall we? You need your lead off man to get on base and know how to safely navigate going station to station....(cough cough)...Big City. Speed is nice here at the #1 slot, but not vital. There is a move afoot in MLB to insert your best hitter in the #2 hole. And there exists good reason for this change as this slot truly triggers how successful an inning a team may have. Look at Mauer over in the Twin Cities...Votto in Cincy....Trout in Anaheim..... Puig in LA.....Cabrera in Toronto....and now Molina in St. Louis... all #2 hitters. Here's how I might go...

Big City
Yadi
Holiday
Peralta
Carpenter
Craig
Grichuk
Ellis

It seems to me that Craig still has a limp.  I think his injury from last year is really affecting him.

In another week or two, if the CF and RF hitters don't pick it up, I'd be fine with the following:

Carpenter
Yadi
Holliday
Adams
Taveras
Peralta
Ellis/Craig/Jay/Bourjos
Ellis/Craig/Jay/Bourjos

So far, Carpenter stinks as a third baseman. Who cares if its his 'natural' position. If he doesn't come around with the glove, then what?

It was mentioned on the broadcast last night that Matheny says he is still adjusting to the speed of 3rd base again. I know that has to be hard when you play on the outfield grass 160+ games of the year and move to the hot corner. He has 6 errors so far this season, but he has also made some great plays. How about that tapper down the 3rd base line where Matt dug up some chalk and fired to first for the out. I'd say give him some time. I'd say he's about there.

2B Carpenter
C Molina
1B Craig
LF Holliday
3B Peralta
RF Taveras
CF Grichuk
SS Diaz

Yes but I'm sure it isn't permanent.
