Re: 2014 MLB game #35: Cards at Braves: Wed 5/7

I think the odds are pretty darn slim that Waino is going to deal back-to-back clunkers, so I like our Cards to come away with the win this evening. Plus you always have to factor in, albeit a very minuscule variable, a pitcher facing the team that initially thought higher of him than all the other teams by tabbing him in the draft and then after having him in their employ for a while, thought him to be expendable and sent him packing. If anyone out there is in need of some sterling PBP this evening, your wish will be granted. As always, we decide whether or not PBP will be a happening thing for that particular day/night by the first poster who renders a "yea" or a "nay". It goes without saying that no response will result in a PBP blackout for all Cardinal Nation subscribers. Play ball!

Re: 2014 MLB game #35: Cards at Braves: Wed 5/7

Quote from Mo: “We’d still like him to play a lot more center field, but there’s no doubt he’s playing well,” said Mozeliak. “I know a lot’s being made out of Oscar ... coming to St. Louis, but right now I don’t even think it’s a logical thing to do. There are a lot of question marks going on in the outfield to begin with, and I think that would muddy it up.

“He needs to do what he’s doing and that obviously will make it a very difficult decision at some point.

“But when you look at some of the guys we have here playing center field, a couple of them are pretty good players.”

So that's why Shane Robinson keeps starting in CF. Taveras has played in center maybe 5 or 6 times. If you you want him to play more CF....guess what you actually have to put him there.

Jmod said Taveras playing in CF just simply wasnt going to happen.  Possibly, but with the chance of two offensive clunkers out there in Bourjos and Jay it may become necessary.

Looks like Bourjos and Grichuk tonight in the outfield. I'm excited to see what they can do against a lefty tonight. I'd rather have Craig in there at 1B over Adams, but what can ya do.

Taveras is niftily playing "DH" tonight. Haha. Mozeliak is basically the real-life version of Aidan Gillen's two main characters at this point (Baelish in GoT & Carcetti in the Wire) when it comes to speaking the truth.

Why do you prefer Craig over Adams at 1st?

Because a lefty is on the mound and Adams is a career .191 hitter against LHP. This year he has been even worse against lefties, hitting .174. There is no reason why Adams should start over Craig at 1B today.

Let the record show that the yea"s have it in a landslide. For those of you out traversing America's vast and lonesome roads during tonight's game and out of KMOX range, you are but a mere click away from getting all of the action. And please let it be noted that the thanks do not belong to me for making this event a happening thing.....but rather to one very special poster out there who sealed the deal with 3 quick and intent strokes of the keyboard.....the esteemed MAP!

To add to that point, Craig's OPS this year vs. lefties is .937 (.482 vs RH) and he has an .888 OPS for his career vs. LH pitchers. It's more than a little stupid to sit a struggling player against the one type of pitching that he particularly feasts on, especially when the alternative hits worse than Pete Kozma.

@LangoschMLB: Per Matheny: Didn't matter who the #STLCards were facing tonight, he didn't want Craig to play. Said he doesn't look right, needs day off.

Top of 1      Minor fondling the rosin for Atlanta this evening.

Carpenter- Walks.......sweet start!

Yadi- Smokes a liner towards the left field corner!.....Upton dives and keeps it in his webbing for a dandy catch to rob Yadi of extra bases. Holy mackerel! You know those games where nothing seems to go right for you? Some of the anguish deserved and some just attributed to bad luck. Well for the most part that sums up this entire 2014 Cardinals season thus far....long way to go though, so let's pray things get turned around.

Holliday- Caught gazing foe strike 3.

Big City- Called out on strikes.

Could be a short night with Minor throwing crazy moving fastballs that just froze the Cardinals biggest hitters in the first and with Wainwright on the mound. Hopefully the offense can make early adjustments against the lefty.

Check out those batting averages at the bottom of the order.  We got 4 hitters in there, then nothing.

The P-D says MM is giving Craig the day off so he will have today and tomorrow off, due to his continuing slump.

3BCarpenter, Matt112.273
CMolina, Yadier417.320
LFHolliday, Matt219.272
1BAdams, Matt29.325
SSPeralta, Jhonny715.233
RFGrichuk, Randal01.176
CFBourjos, Peter03.179
2BEllis, Mark04.186

Minor has a little Jon Lester reminisce to himself. By attacking both sides and just pounding it in on righties. Cardinals will have a tough time if that continues to be his approach through the rest of this game if they can't turn on the ball.

Top of 2

Peralta- Caught looking for strike 3...Minor's 3rd....all of them looking.

Grichuk-  Chops one towards 3rd...where Johnson handles the short hop and flings her on over to Freeman at 1st for the out.

Bourjos- Tees off on a deep drive to left!......FORE!!!!!!......it is 4!!...a home run and the Cardinals seize the lead 1-0!! When that baby left his bat there was absolutely know doubt where that ball was going to end up landing....it was just a matter of how high up in the seats.

Ellis- Flys out routinely to Upton in center to retire the side.

Cards 1      Braves 0
