Exhibition game: St. Louis at Memphis: Fri 3/28

Joe Kelly vs. Zach Petrick. 6:35 PM. KMOX and Sports 56 radio in Memphis. (If past years are any indication, the radio broadcasts of this game should be streamed over the net and not blacked out.)

Memphis traveling roster posted for TCN subscribers earlier today.

St. Louis lineup: Carpenter 5, Wong 4, Holliday 7, Craig 9, Molina 2, Peralta 6, Adams 3, Bourjos 8, Kelly 1.

Memphis lineup: Garcia 4, Pham 9, Taveras DH, Grichuk 8, Butler 7, Scruggs 3, Mateo 6, Curtis 5, Perez 2.

Yes, I know Memphis is using a DH and St. Louis is not. Also that Scruggs is still officially on the Cardinals. Remember that this is an exhibition.

Great news! This game will be available as a free preview on MiLB.TV. (That is Minor League Baseball TV. I subscribe every year and recommend it highly if you care about the minors.)

I also subscribe every year. I usually have the Cardinal game on TV, either Memphis or Springfield on the computer and one of the lower classification teams on audio. Like watching a tennis match but fun. As of last year all AA and AAA teams televised their home games on MilB TV. Occasionally you could also get Peoria, and State College. Seems like more teams are televising every year. Haven't checked out the teams televising for 2014 yet. Also they archive most games so if I watch Memphis live I can go back and view the archive of the Springfield game later.

I do the exact same thing at the beginning of each year.

When are we going to get the official game thread for opening day?

C'mon Domeboys, you know you are just itching to put it up after this long, hard, cold winter..:)

Not really, but because you asked, I put up the entire first series in Cincinnati.

Do they have a free trial for milb like mlb? Also how are the broadcasts? I cant imagine every park has decent cameras or if they are decent more than a few of them?

I think what they say about you might have a shred of merit.....that you're a closet Reds fan, Rat.

"Yay?" Now, I know *that* is a legal term, because I hear it every time the judge comes into the courtroom. "Oh yay, oh yay." ;-)

Friday night is a free trial. The quality is not HD and the production is not always MLB-caliber, but consider the alternative. $40 for the season is a pretty good deal, IMO.

Memphis is good. Some have some pretty weird camera angles and some of the Class A games are a little dark. But there are very few that are hard to watch. And some show improvement from year to year.

Will OT be playing in this one? I saw you posted about his hit yesterday in the minor league ST notebook.

Lineups have not been announced. I understand the weather forecast is a bit dicey. My guess is that he would play unless the grounds are messy.

I see on MLBTR (they don't give a source) that Joey Butler has been "outrighted" to Memphis.  I presume this means he's off the 40-man roster, as you suggested earlier this week might happen?

Yes, that's what it means.

I assume then that Aardsma is going to make the team?  They already cleared a spot for Neshek when they outrighted Castro, and Butler and Rondon are already on the 40 man.

...and Jaime Garcia don't go to DL-60. Right?

Re: Exhibition game: St. Louis at Memphis: Fri 3/28

There's always McGregor.  But yes, I would suggest that Aardsma would be the guy, unless Mo has another ace (pun not intended) up his sleeve; i.e., a weekend trade for a middle reliever.  But clearly, with neither McGregor, Butler nor Rondon grabbing the job outright, the tie goes to the guy with ML experience.  (Like you, I would have rather they kept Freeman or even Lyons.)

Aardsma didn't look all that sharp even in his scoreless inning, although his breaking pitch did induce two groundball outs and a called third strike on Hairston the other day; it was his fastball, such as it was, that he didn't have good command of.  I would imagine he'll be pitching middle-middle relief at first anyway, which is to say only when we are behind (saving the other guys for when we have a lead).  That role has its value, too.

Freeman should be in the bullpen.

All it means for sure right now is that they have no plans for Joey Butler in the majors and wanted to clear a roster spot. Whether they use it on Aardsma, another acquisition or hold onto it for awhile remains to be seen.
