Cards sign Aardsma

The last spot in the bullpen may be taken by a new arrival. David Aardsma has been signed to a minor league deal (for now) and has been assigned uniform #53.

Why?  So they could be the 4th team to release him in the last year?

RE: Cards sign Aardsma

He was a decent reliever for the Mets post Tommy John in 43 games last year. Was one of the better closers for the Mariners before Tommy John. Why we decide to sign him now with a week left rather than earlier this spring?

So if Aardsma makes the team, who comes off the 40 man this time?  Rafael Ortega?

He was with Cleveland until two days ago.

Maybe Joey Butler.

Perhaps Jaime Garcia will move to the 60-day DL.

Goold speculated as much when discussing McGregor as the final bullpen option two days ago in his chat:

Derrick, If the club does go with McGregor in the bullpen to start the season, who would be the most likely to lose a spot on the 40 man to accommodate him (presuming the final spot goes to Neshek)? How much, if any, do you think the full 40 man roster may impact the club's decision on the final reliever going north?

It's a factor. But remember they could also slide somebody to the 60-day disabled list. That would be chancy I guess with the idea that Garcia wouldn't be eligible to come off through the first two months of the season, but that's a reality that the team would have to consider without losing someone from the 40-man roster.

I saw this over on the newspaper forums....yikes!

This is what Aardsma said on twitter after the Peralta signing:

Apparently getting suspended for PED's means you get a raise. What's stopping anyone from doing it? #weneedtomakeachange

Several reasons. 1) Memphis has too many outfielders but Springfield, where Ortega is going to play, has a bit more roster room. 2) Six years. That is the age difference between Butler (28) and Ortega (22). 3) If the Cards need a RHH OF from Memphis, Piscotty and Grichuk would be ahead of Butler, anyway.

I could probably come up with more, but I will stop there.  ;-)

P.S. Before spring camp even started, when I did my roster prediction series, I said I did not see where Butler fits in this system. Nothing has happened since to change my view.

Butler is 28 and strikes out too much to be an MLB regular. Ortega, at least, has some upside, at age 23. Ortega also can play above-average CF (so I've heard) and he had some BABIP-driven batting average depression last year.

Oh and Ortega has a opening in the Springfield outfield, while Butler is competing for a spot among 11 other outfielders vying for a spot in the STL and Memphis outfields.

(Holliday, Craig, Bourjos, Jay, Robinson, Taveras, Piscotty, Grichuk, Pham, O'Neill, and Ramsey)

Ortega may be SOL if Ramsey is indeed headed back to AA, Springfield to start the year. I prefer them both to be there though.

Okay, it makes sense.

Matt Adams is likely to be upset by this news since he now moves to second on all roll calls and all alphabetically-assigned lockers and announcements...tough day for the big guy!

I have a dream. Of one day being able to pacify Crdswmn when I disagree with her, with just one quick post in the fashion as we see above. Ever time I differ with her she comes back with all guns a blazing. Maybe it's not what I say but how I say it???? As far as Aardsma, I remember watching him pitch when he was younger and thinking how anyone could hit the guy.....his pitches looked as nasty as nasty gets. Have not seen him in a couple years.

Even the great Henry Aaron would find himself in a similar predicament, so Matt shouldn't feel too bad.

Re: Cards sign Aardsma

I have been saying all along that this would happen but you don't have to be Notre Dame ous to have seen it coming. I am curious why this guy has been released yet again? If his arm was not sound i can't see the Cards signing him. My guess is he is not throwing enough strikes. If that is the case i bet this staff fixes him and he has a bounce back year. They need more experience on the mound and they just got it. If he doesn't pan out they let him go when Motte is ready but i am betting he lasts all year. Another good move by Moz i think.

GO CARDS!

Yeah, when Aardsma got to the bigs he replaced Hank and Tommie at the top of the list in the baseball encyclopedias.

Seems like this guy had a terrific arm at one time, and was pretty good. But not sure what he's like now - obviously he's considered expendable based on recent history.

The batter he walked today is the first one he's walked all spring, in 7 innings counting today.

The difference is I was not disagreeing with Brian, I was asking him to explain his response to my question.  He explained it, and I saw the sense of it.

Haha, I laughed out loud when I read this..... do they get to be first in line to go to the lunch/dinner line right after roll call as well?
