Jhonny Peralta free agent thread

Per ESPN's Jerry Crasnick on Twitter:

Can you add to the contract that they forfeit all future salary and are cut if they test positive for PED's?

I love it and thank you for being on top of it, you are spot on with your important posts!!!  He can play SS, 3B and I would assume 2B as well if Wong falters and they find another SS?

Would be a great signing in my opinion if it happens.  This contract would run out, unless it's insane in years, by the time the franchise guys get expensive.  My guess, 3/42M with a 1 year option at 14M or a 3M buyout if he's settling this early which works for me.

I think the price will be higher. Yesterday, Peter Gammons said he had a 4/52 offer on the table already.

I just dont like the idea of rewarding a cheater for cheating. Just like Melky getting a good contract after serving a suspension. Plus next time Peralta does it he's out 100 games almost a full season.

If true, just think how much more offense we will get from the SS position.

Any thoughts on his defense at SS?

If that's what it is, that would be fine by me overall.  Even if they don't see him at SS for those 4 years, he still gives up a much better option and doesn't make us as desperate as I'm sure has seemed in the trade market and maybe teams won't be asking for Shelby for 1 year of Hardy!

Any word or whispers on A. Diaz from the more informed side of things?  With all of the money free now, even over paying a bit for him could turn out to be more than worth their while.

His defense is pretty horrible if I remember correctly. He will be a huge downgrade defensively at SS. In fact the Tigers got Iglesious because Peralta wasn't going to be a part of their future.

Mark McGwire...  Still one of my favorite Cards.  Everyone deserves a second chance and I am sure those saying they do not want a cheater have never cheated at anything in their lives and would not do so to get ahead.  If he sucks on defense, I do not want him though.  I would rather have Drew with his iffy bat.

May cheating may have got me one extra problem right on a math test. It didn't earn me 11 plus million dollars a year. Plus really how much can you trust someone to not do it again?

Some perspective. Since 2005, 29 Cardinals minor leaguers have been suspended for substance violations plus two other minor leaguers were signed after being suspended when with other organizations.

It would seem that no teams were willing to make an acceptable trade for a young shortstop and Mo did not want to wait on Boras and Drew. If the Peralta deal is done, so is Mo for this off-season, it appears. I like the approach of addressing the key needs as quickly as possible.

You think they leave the bench as is?   That was a huge weakness in playoffs.. OR is that something they build in season?   I would not be a fan of carrying Kozma and Descalso on same roster.. One not the other..

They could add another veteran bat, but I don't consider that a major acquisition. One view of the current bench would be: Jay, Cruz, Taveras, Kozma and Descalso.

I'm fine with signing Peralta.  I'd much rather do that than trade the future for a SS.  I hope in the time that Peralta is on his new contract with the Cardinals, the organization steps up its efforts to resolve the SS issue for the next 10 years through drafting/development or the international market.

To Brian:  wink.

I didn't want Peralta but it looks like that's who we are getting. So that means Craig to RF. I wish they could a new backup catcher. Yadi cannot keep playing that many games behind the plate and expected to be fresh for the playoff if/when we make them. I would like Navarro. Having Cruz, Kozma, and Descalso makes for a weak hitting bench.

Just saying, cheating is cheating...  You can minimize your own 'sins' and maximize others but it does not change what it is at the root of it all.

I agree... filling obvious needs early puts you in a prime position to take advantage of opportunities instead of stretching to fill needs.

Honestly, if we do sign peralta (or drew for that matter) we would have pretty much nailed roughly what i thought we should do in the offseason so far.

As for that... to me that's honestly not a good bench.  three of those players are terrible.  jay is solid, and taveras is a bit of a wild card due to the injury last year and being so young.  if i was mo i would be going after two more middle infielders and a backup catcher... even if it is through trade as a "throwin" while going after another player.

as for who i'd go after?  david price.
