With Napoli seemingly out w/o the DH, we need to be willing to pitch around Ortiz.   I be for IW him or pitching around him to a walk 75% of the ABs.  Then get aggressive and attack the other hitters and don't get behind in the counts.  Hopefully Kelley can step up here.  I think Peavy can be Scored upon.  Craig will be on bench with the RH Peavy, but man, what a huge weapon off the bench.  Descalso and Jay prob start again too.  Go Team

So far this world series has caused me to miss my episode of Perry Mason and The Streets of San Francisco.  Now it looks like it might cause me to miss my Mannix episode.  I better take a nap Saturday afternoon so i can stay up late and watch Joe after the game is over.

We have a pretty decided advantage in the next couple games in my opinion (depending on if buckholtz can really go).  we should get to peavy, just need kelly to keep his walks down.  his control is in my opinion the key to this game.

I suspect (speculate) that if (hopefully) the Cardinals win Game 3, the Sox will use Lester in Game 4 on short rest, expecially since Buckholtz is questionable. I like the Cardinals chances facing him a second time in four days on short rest, in Busch III.

Go Kelly! Go Cards!!!

Re: 2013 World Series Game 3 thread: Red Sox at Cards: Sat 10/26

Wacha was definitely getting squeezed by the HP ump last night....which would have been alright if the stinginess had been reciprocal. Plus as Bobby Reed pointed out in the game thread, his fast ball was down a couple of ticks. Which makes his beautiful performance, albeit sub-Wacha, even that much more impressive. The worry with his fb being a titch down may be that his arm may be just a wee bit tired. In strict preparation of a possible second Wacha appearance, under no circumstances should he be allowed to lift a finger....not one if our Cards want to win this thing! That means not even lifting his fork to his mouth at the supper table.....Miller can feed him....through no fault of his own, Shelby's not doing anything meaningful at the moment. Wacha's shoelaces come untied.....not to worry....it's Miller to the rescue. And what about that first date to the movies with the cute little ballgirl that Michael has been waiting for? He can go, but so can Miller.....to do the hand holding for him. And signing all of those autographs for the youngsters? Not to worry with Shelby at his side signing "Michael Wacha" for him....which actually could be a blessing in disguise for those autograph hounds. Tell me Abraham Lincoln signing the name "George Washington" to a document wouldn't be worth a pretty penny today.

I agree, control is the key.  The Boston line up is excellent at making pitchers with bad control pay.  I'd like Kelly to go out there and attack them, make them swing the bat.  They'll get some hits that way and I'm not expecting Kelly to pitch a shutout, but at least limit the damage by not issuing the free passes (unless it's Ortiz with 2 outs).  Kelly getting the calls on his sinker at the bottom of the zone will be key in this game.

Re: 2013 World Series Game 3 thread: Red Sox at Cards: Sat 10/26

I'd like to see Adams start over Craig for these first two games, given Craig's injury and that we'll be facing right-handed pitchers in Peavy and Buchholtz.

Adams has an .847 OPS vs. righties (OPS of .594 vs. lefties)

Craig's OPS vs. righties is .835 for his career and .845 for 2013. (.885 vs lefties pirate)

Given Craig's injury, I don't see a justification for using him over Adams, given their similar output when facing right-handed pitching.

Either of them would be awesome pinch-hitting options.

Agree. I'd do a straight platoon at home at first base since Craig is most likely not 100%. Need to keep him healthy to DH in Boston if we go back there.

I keep harping on this, but if I'm Shelby Miller and am not injured, I'm PO'd. The justification for not using him is that he did not pitch as well in September, supposedly due to being worn out.

Now that he hasn't pitching in a few weeks, you're probably not looking at the "September" Miller anymore, but more like the "July/August" Miller.

But we've done well with the Wainwright-Wacha-Kelly-Lynn rotation, so I guess it doesn't matter. It's just that a healthy Miller can dominate moreso that Kelly or Lynn, so in a sense we are not using one of our top weapons.

Has Miller pitched at all in the post-season?

I think he warmed up a couple of times, but has not pitched at all.

Kelly was a moch more dominating pitcher in August and September than was Miller. Cards now have home field advantage. A three game sweep at home would be fantastic. I would still agree with some who have suggested starting Miller instead of Lynn.

From what I have seen from the Red Sox in these playoffs is that they have convinced the umps that anything low a away is a ball..  As a team they simply dont swing at that pitch..  Much like how the Braves  pitchers always pound the outside corner and seemingly get the ump to give them 3 or 4 extra inches on the call..
I dont think anyone truly has an advantage yet..  Kelly and Lynn HAVE to throw good games for the Cards to have a shot in this series.  They have to give at least 5 or 6 innings each..    Offense has to get in gear and put some pressure on Sox pitchers..

He pitched an inning in the Pirates series and gave up a homerun to Marte.  That was the Lynn start we lost.

I wonder if we would use Shelby in a piggyback situation if Lynn or Kelly falter going through the line up a second or third time?  3-4 innings from the starter and then 2-3 from a healthy Shelby would be tough for a line up to face.

I think you start him with Lynn as the long reliever if things don't go well.

Looks like the beards are on the bench to start Game 3.  Ortiz and Nava play, Gomes and Napoli sit.

I'd like to see Adams rip one at Ortiz.
