Cubs Fire Manager

Just read where they are targeting Joe Girardi.

Not sure why anybody would want to manage the Cubs.

Maybe  because they are willing to overpay for mediocre performance?

Not really fair to blame Wade for that mess. I am not sure Connie Mack himself could guide that roster to a winning season. Maybe they should stop employing malcontents like Castro and Garza and target mature adults instead.

With Theo in charge I think they will continue with the Castros and Garzas, and Marmols

This club was soooo underwhelming this year that i forgot their manager was Dale Sveum and not Mike Wade. The messed up thing is that we just played them yesterday. My mistake. crazy crazy crazy

Mike Quade

The only reason to fire him knowing you have at least a 2-3 year rebuilding project is that you have someone in mind (put the feelers out) to take the job. Svuem by all accounts was liked by the players and was thought to have been doing a good job with what he had.

Has Cubs nation started with the 'should have gone with Sandberg' yet?

Some may want the challenge.
Some may believe they can be the hero to turn them around.
Some may like the fact that it is a "no lose" situation. i.e. if they win it would be a surprise.
But I think CC is probably right.

Not sure why anybody would want to make their home in St. Louis.

I am sure many people feel that same way about Chicago.

My brother lives in Kendall County is one who feels that way.

(btw, I don't live in or near St Louis)

Sorry, didn't mean to offend.  Just a rude way of saying that as someone who has visited Chicago a lot, I can see that city being a draw for many.  Let's try this again:

"Not sure why anybody would want to manage the Cubs."

Job security?

RE: Cubs Fire Manager

I have visited quite a few times over the years, always focussing on downtown/Wrigleyville and sometimes Comisky as well. Very fun place to visit.

There are only 30 MLB manager jobs out there, and only a handful availible each year. As far as managing the Cubs, it seems like managing the personalities of the stars and big name guys is an issue. For that reason, they should shy away from the Quade's and Sveums who have niether the experience nor heft to have any chance of not getting run over.

RE: Cubs Fire Manager

I was actually sort of shocked when they did not hire Sandberg a couple of years ago. It seemed the perfect time as the Cubs were down, and to go with a local legend who had paid his dues in the minors was the perfect synergy.

It would have been a little like us going with Matheny, only Sandberg actually had experience.

It's decisions like that that the Cubs make all too often, and thus they go through these stretches of poor results.

No one here remembers the infamous "college of coaches". I really do not remember them, but my dad told me about it and you can read about the concept.

Seems like the last great manager the Cubs had was Frank Chance.

The bigger shock, for me anyways, was they refused to even interview Sandberg.

To chime in on why anyone would want to manage the Cubs - quite frankly, the Cubs are sleeping giant.

Can you imagine the legacy that the manager will have that leads the Cubs to a championship? That is a pretty good incentive. And with the rabid fan base and national following they have, it's a potentially a lucrative job.

Maybe Theo didn't want his manager overshadowing him. And who would want to have to fire Ryne Sandberg in Chicago? Talk about pressure.

Yeah, it has been for about 100 years.
