Cardinals acquire Axford from Brewers (per Goold on Twitter)

That's it.  That 25th roster spot has been taken.

What is Mo's deal with trading for every crappy player he can find? I am getting very sick of it.

Re: Cards acquire John Axford for a PTBNL

Not sure what is up with this acquisition.  Are they possibly thinking he can revert back to his 2010/2011 form and fill the closer role next year if Motte isnt available?  2010 and 2011, those were a couple of pretty good years.  But last year and this year he has been less than stellar.

Perhaps a change of environment and a new team that is a world series contender might jump start his career.  I believe he still throws pretty hard.

RE: Cards acquire John Axford for a PTBNL

I'll withhold judgement until the end of the season. Maybe he'll give us some decent middle-late inning relief. I doubt they have any intention of using him to close, this year or in the future. Unless we're in crisis mode, where we've tried about every option but the Ax-man, he'll be used before the 9th I would think.

Hopefully the PTBNL isn't much. You don't go sending a division rival a good prospect.

Trevor Rosenthal has zero saves and four blown ones....not the best measurement of a pitcher, that's for sure.

Hmmm, some positives....well, he still has a ++K rate and he's got his BB/9 rate down to 3.8 this year. He is still throwing his fastball around 95 MPH. He's only 30 years old. He's in the first year of 4 arbitration years so he's potentially under contract for a while, although he is making $5M a year already...yikes...

But he is terrible against NL Central teams.  5+ ERA against both the Pirates and the Reds.  It's going to be ugly.

Why not? A veteran arm for the pen instead of having to use Wacha for 4 innings or a Westbrook for 7 innings. If he works out it will be a benefit and if he doesn`t then the Cards lose a PTBNL.I see this a a risk worth taking because he still has a good groundball rate and a decent K rate .Mo is taking a small gamble that Axford will benefit from a change of scenery.

Goold or someone has pointed out that of all the home runs Axford has allowed in his career, only four have come in parks other than Milwaukee and Cincinnati's.  Naturally, we've got four games in Cincinnati next week.

They also point out that this move frees Wacha to make next Tuesday's start.

10 and 2/3 innings?

He has a 1.17 ERA against the Cardinals! LOL

As long as Axford doesn't turn out to be Todd Burns revisited.

(In 1993, the Cards needed late-season help and the rumor mill had us trading for Wally Joyner - it got to the point where Gammons reported the deal was "imminent".  Instead, the Cards traded for Todd Burns, as ownership - August III was running the team at the time - decided that they didn't want to spend any more than that.  The Burns deal was disappointing enough that Jack Buck even cites it in his autobiography as an example of how bad things had gotten in the years before the team was sold.)

The Reds are ecstatic.  They were all over him last week.

To that point, in the second half of the season Axford's SIERA and xFIP reveal that he has pitched much better than his ERA shows. He is effective if he can avoid the longball, something he should be able to better control by leaving Miller Park and working with Yadi. I don't particularly like the idea of adding Axford but this might be the upside Mo sees, and I can dig it.

We'll see. I have no faith in this acquisition.  He is a taller version of Salas.
