There has been some debate over Rosenthal's workload this year, but it is Mujica's workload that has been causing real problems. Mujica received treatment for his fatigue-induced soreness yesterday and may not be available again today.

Wainwright was the last Cardinals starter to last 6+ innings (Aug 18), so the bullpen has carried a heavy load lately. It would be great if Adam could go deep tonight and limit the number of pitchers we have to use. Hopefully he can avoid the longball, too. He has given up 4 HR in his last 5 starts after giving up just 6 all year.

I'm hopeful that we can earn a win again tonight with Adam matched up against KM and the Cardinals playing well.

Since there is no structural damage, and the injury is strictly a consequence of fatigue, the treatment was just with a chiropractor. He basically has a sore muscle and a knot in his neck.

Speaking of injured pitchers, I see where the Cards put Westbrook on the DL today and called up Carlos Martinez.  Still up in the air, though, whether Martinez (who was originally scheduled to start today for Memphis) or Lyons starts in Westbrook's place on Monday.

Saw this elsewhere and had to steal it:

Kozma's defense is starting to slip recently, according to UZR. Just 3.8 now.

That makes Kozma a sub-replacement level player at this point. -.2.0 WAR.

Also, since we've been making this comparison all season, here is Kozma v. Ryan:

Ryan '10 -- .223 /.279/.294 for a 55 wRC+
Kozma '13 -- .219/.275/.277 for a 50 wRC+

Ryan had a 22 DRS, 13.3 UZR that year.

I've sort of been beating this drum for a while now, but I believe Kozma's net impact on the game has reached a tipping point where his positive impact on defense no longer balances out his negative impact on offense.

Kozma is batting .075/.213/.100/.313 in 47 PA's (August) and .155/.237/.194/.431 in 114 PA's (dating back to July 1). If his defensive ratings are also trending downward, I find it harder and harder to justify his place in the lineup except as a late game defensive substitution.

If you will recall from yesterday, Matheny pinch hit Adams for Kozma in the sixth when we had RISP. (I stood and applauded the decision, although Adams struck out.) Descalso then came in to finish the game. Matheny's confidence in Pete might finally be running out.

I think Jake has been hurt since the All star break. I thought i read a comment earlier somewhere where Jake alluded to not getting back to 100% since his injury. This is a smart move IMO b/c maybe he can get right now and be a better pitcher in time for the play offs. My guess is Lyons goes to the rotation and Martinez goes to the pen to provide a little relief for Rosie, Manness and Mujica all who have been rode hard lately and are showing some signs of fatigue.

GO CARDS!

Kozma is simply not a major league hitter.  His defense is solid, but not exceptional.  I wonder if Carpenter could learn to play SS.  What the hell, he learned to play 2B and quite well, I'd say.

What's wrong with Wainwright? Why can't he be perfect.

Great catch in foul ground by their SS on Wong's pop up. He swung at one neck high. Failed to advance Jay.
