Time for Wainwright to step up like an ace does.  With Pittsburgh coming in on the heels of a three game sweep in Colorado they are ripe for the picking.  And with the Reds having three in Chicago and four in Milwaukee, this might be a three team horse race by the end of this week.

Wainwright is our guy RB. I expect a dominate performance from AW against the Bucko's after long rest. Adam has pitched a lot of innings due to his going deep in most of his starts. Do the Pirates have enough experience on the roster in the "Dog days" of a pennant race? I doubt it. St.Louis really needs 2 out of 3 here both to pull a little closer and to serve notice. Biggest series of the year for sure to this date. Making a day early prediction on this one. 5-1 St.Louis! excitedexcitedexcited

GO CARDS!

Again, the word is "dominant", not "dominate" performance.

I believe he and Shane Robinson are both eligible to come off the DL on Thursday.

Pirates picked up Kelly Shoppach btw and they also brought up outfielder Andrew Lambo

Lambo has hit 31 homeruns so far this year and most reminds me of Rick Ankiel in that vein.

Lambo OPSed .942 in AAA compared to Brock Peterson's .938.  Basically the same.  We will have to see if Hurdle makes use of his guy the same way Matheney used Peterson.  Which is to say, letting him sit in any sort of meaningful situation where a bat off the bench of his handed-ness, with pop potential, would have been just the thing.  Then wheeling him out occasionally in meaningless situations.

Re: 2013 MLB game 118 thread: Bucs at Cards, Tue 8/13

Newbie here... stumbled across this site on Google and thought I'd drop by.

As a Bucs fan, pitching match up scares me.  Morton is just plain bad against the Cards, and tonight will be tough.  I'd like to think they'll plate a few runs against Wainwright, and the Cards bullpen isn't what it's been in the past, but unless Charlie has his sinker at its best, Bucs may be in for a long night.

All of that being said, the Bucs are in a better position going into tonight's game.  A bad losing streak, but still up by three - and if they somehow manage a win with their worst pitcher against the StL stud pitcher, with Burnett and Liriano on deck, then the series takes a huge turn.

Bucs fans, Cards fans, and even the players all doubt that the Bucs are the better team.  So, regardless of the last series, this is still a series where the Bucs are facing "Goliath'.  Regardless, it'll be a fun one to watch with 2 teams that'll be good in the Central for years to come.

pirate Go Bucs!

I'm hoping Lambo isn't "bench help" but is actually the starting RF.  The Bucs RF stats are worst in NL... and this would replace RF with at least a mid grade capable player - in a sense, picking up a deadline bat without giving up anything (except a few more months of development at AAA which shouldn't be sold short).

I don't really think they are the same at all. Lambo only has 451 total AAA at-bats. He got called up to AA prematurely at age 19. Lambo is just 24 right now. He was also a top prospect at one time.

Peterson didn't make it to AA until age 23. Then he spent 2 years in Minnesota's AAA team, then nearly two full years on an independant team, then he spent this past season on the Cards AAA team after playing a bit with us last year. He is 29 years old. He has 1400 AAA at bats and 1000 AA at bats.

I said Rick Ankiel due to Lambo penchant for striking out so much and hitting a ton of home runs.

Bucksfan, thanks for joining in. Hope you stay around. I agree the Pirates and Cards are likely to be fighting it out for the Division in years ahead. Sadly, the Cards are very beatable right now so I hope the Bucs self destruct somehow.

Thanks for the welcome!  I'll visit throughout the series.  ESPN boards being depleted has left me without a home.

Bucs have had their share of 2nd half slides.  Every pirate fan gets nervous this time of year any time they lose a series.  But fundamentally, they are a better ball club than years past.  And while I'd love for them to win the Division, I really think Liriano against Cinci is one of the best matchups any team could ever hope for in a one game series.  Cinci just can't hit him and his slider.  So, I'm just enjoying some good baseball until one of those 2 occurrences happen ( the playoff or the division).

This upcoming series is just a measuring stick for the Bucs.  Where are they against good teams?

Good to talk with you all... Off to finish a few hours of work.  I'll stop by tonight.

Maybe you are right about the situation being different.  Bucksfan pointed out that nobody is really blocking Lambo from getting regular time in RF so he could be more that a bat off the bench option for Hurdle.

Well we were lucky they lost all 3 to the Rockies since we lost 2 of 3 to the Cubs. The Reds are the ones playing well right now.
