We really need Miller to step up, along with Lynn.  Otherwise, our starting rotation is going to be very shaky indeed.  Wainwright alone is not enough.

Re: 2013 MLB game 97 thread: Phillies at Cards Tue 7/23

That's why the Cards are supposedly nosing around for starting pitching.  If not Lee, then Peavy.

With Lynn, I'm a little concerned that he and the coaches do not appear to be on the same page.  MM talked after the game about Lynn's slow pace and his inability to get the breaking stuff to work; Lynn said he didn't think his pace was a problem and was worried about his fastball.

In Miller's case, there's been talk that he's abandoned the form he had earlier in the season.  Again, he needs to listen to coaches and get back to where he was.

When I watch a game, there's nothing that irks me more than a pitcher who gets ahead in the count 0-2 and starts nibbling, winding up walking the guy or giving up a hit on a get-me-over-fastball.  I'm with Gibson on this one - stop wasting pitches and put the guy away.

Most pitchers are not talented enough to simply throw the ball past every hitter. That is why teams study tendencies and video and the coaches help the pitchers develop a game plan for each hitter. Certainly, not every one can execute the plan flawlessly.

Your last paragraph sounds like a perfect description of High May.

No thanks on Peavy.  Lee or Garza I'd love to have.  And like I said in March, the time has come when we'd love to have Lohse on our roster.  Not that I blame Mo for backing off a three year, thirty plus million dollar contract; being a GM these days is an incredibly delicate balancing act.

With Lohse, there's no question that we'd have the best record in baseball right now. He's that much of a difference-maker.

Agreed.  Just look at the 2011 and 2012 he had for us.

Yahoo Sports/MLB is reporting Garza is going to the Rangers.

Doesn't look like we will have gained any on Pittsburgh as we head into the Tuesday game against Philadelphia.  McCutcheon has 2 two run homers in his first two atbats and the Pirates lead 4-0 early against the Senators at RFK Stadium.  Now they have 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 4th.  This one could be out of reach early.

Looking forward to watching the Reds and Giants out west tonight at Candlestick.

I'm surprised he doesn't refer to Busch Stadium as Sportsman's Park.

It isn't the least bit amusing.

We are facing 3 just ok pitches. I say we should sweep the cheesesteaks in St. louie no matter who we put on the mound. Shelby, Lynn and westbrooke all need to just keep us in the game and let the bullpen finish the Phighting Phools.

Originally it was legit.  Again, alot of the stadiums i have no clue what their names are anymore.  And yes, some of it was my feeble attempt at humor.  I'll stop.

Anyway, the Pirates and Reds all gained on us last night.  Pirates win 6-5 in Washington and the Reds pound the Giants 11-0 at Pac Bell Stadium.  See, i called it Pac Bell, not Candlestick!

I was being sarcastic. Anyway, Lohse is a miserable playoff pitcher and personally I don't think the "upgrade" is worth it. I don't want him and his awful peripherals any where near a game 3.

Wow.  Lohse was awfully good for us in 2011 and 2012.  If he struggled in the playoffs, I don't know what difference that makes.  You have to take the entire body of work for an entire season.  Playoff baseball is a crap shoot, plain and simple.

Re: 2013 MLB game 97 thread: Phillies at Cards Tue 7/23

Yes he was pretty good, but we don't need a good regular season pitcher this year. We have the best record in baseball. Lohse wouldn't have improved our team at all THIS year.

Further, acquiring him now would not benefit us either going forward. If we are going to get a pitcher in a deal, I want one that can be better than our starters by the time the playoffs start.

Even still, Lohse got a 3yr/$33M deal. I'm perfectly fine with having that money to spend on someone else (assuming there is a baseline budget) and getting Kaminsky in the draft.

Let's see where we sit with Carpenter on his final (?) rehab start. Let's see what Lance Lynn does his next few times out there. Let's see what unfolds with the Kelly/Wacha/Lyons/Martinez competition. I mean, we have three (3) starters with an ERA under 3.00!!!!

Lohse has never been a guy with good peripherals given he doesn't strike many batters out and pitches to contact with most of his outs coming via fly ball. For Lohse the statistic I look at is quality start even though it can be misleading for other pitchers.
