Butler optioned to Memphis

They want him to pitch more regularly out of the pen there.

Re: Butler optioned to Memphis

I find this decision somewhat odd since there was no corresponding move made and the team has said that they are evaluating Martinez's role. That's two roster positions in flux at the moment.

Re: Butler optioned to Memphis

He'd been pitching well, too, at the MLB level.  How many relievers get sent down with a sub-2 ERA at the MLB level, who've been groomed as relievers?  Seems like another agenda is in play.  Another suggestion that CMart is being showcased, perhaps?

They have until Friday to designate the callup (Salas, perhaps?); until then whoever it is can continue to play. As for Martinez, I think he stays until either Carpenter or another pitcher (trade?) joins the team.

From a morning P-D article.

"The Cardinals preference is to avoid a trade that could only be completed with a high-end prospect like Martinez."

There's your answer.

Carpenter isn't slated to be ready until July 30th at the earliest. Martinez could end up staying with the big-club for awhile unless a trade happens in a week or so.

July 30 is only two weeks away.

RE: Butler optioned to Memphis

The Cards org might be applying a lesson learned with Wacha in their handling of Martinez. Early in the season, the common wisdom was that once Wacha was called up, he wouldn't be going back down. He was that good. Nobody argued with that. Well, we all forgot that being successful in a MLB rotation is about a lot more than having a great arm and great stuff. So Wacha wasn't here to stay. The idea might be to let Martinez get acclimated bit by bit, without the pressure of having to hold his own in the rotation. It seems he has nothing more to gain from more AAA starts other than to stay sharp as he eases into the bigs.

I personally consider the idea Mo might consider trading Martinez ridiculous.

But Wacha was brought up as a starter; whereas CMart is here as a reliever....after the club had announced its intention to stretch him out as a starter....

RE: Butler optioned to Memphis

Based on the P-D story, I got the impression the Cardinals moved Butler down so he could pick up more innings during the break. I'm not sure how long the team has to wait before recalling a player, but I would imagine Butler will be brought right back up when he become eligible. I would imagine they just didn't want him sitting around through the All-Star break after not getting regular big league work. I would also assume Salas will be brought back fairly soon. Maybe they fill Butler's spot with Salas, let Butler hang in Memphis until he can be recalled and then send Martinez back down after/if they get through Kelly's start.

The PCL has their All-Star break this week as well....July 15-16-17.

Re: Butler optioned to Memphis

My guess is either a trade it in the works for Garza or Jackson is being called up. Remember also that the decision to dl Holliday has yet to be made. Just throwing that out there.

Whatever the move is. You can be assured it will be announced when everyone is tucked away for the evening.

Re: Butler optioned to Memphis

This makes me think that Salas will be called up for the next MLB game to replace Butler.  No need to make that move now.  He can get another outing or two to stay sharp before the callup.  I'd figured Salas would replace CMart, but I'm guessing now I was wrong on that.  CMart as long man till Carp comes back and Kelly moves back to long man.  At that point I wonder if they'll make CMart the 7th inning guy.  I'd like to seem him get more innings to prep as a starter, but I could see the logic.  Martinez/Rosenthal/Mujica could make it a 6 inning game for the other team.

Re: Butler optioned to Memphis

Yeah but why bring up another pitcher when indications are they won't need a 5th until July 27th? Wouldn't you have enough bullpen help with Kelly?

Now that changes if you just decide to roll out with the 5 man.

Good point.  Maybe it will be a position player, instead, at least for a few days.  Thanks.

I'd think Salas would come back because on the whole he's been an effective big league pitcher. He's been unscored on in 10 of his 11 AAA appearances with 11 K's and 1 BB in 11.2 ip.  I'd guess he would become an innings eater used in low leverage situations and I'd be fine with that.

Or showcasing Salas for a trade? Can't imagine he brings much but who knows. If we trade CMart I will not forgive Mo for a long while. Surely he is smarter than that.
