Good to see we'll be able to make use of the DH this week. Adams should get plenty of at-bats.

I really hope they don't use Wigginton Wednesday against the leftie, unless Matheny feels Holliday or Beltran need a break.

I smell a slump beginning.  We need to win these two games against the Astros.  This weekend will be tough at Oakland and then at Anaheim.

Anaheim is 10 games under .500, the latest they've been so bad in years, having just been swept by Pittsburgh.  Naturally, they'll get hot against us.  Astros are 7-4 in their past 11 games.

So the Cards are going to miss the dreaded Bud Norris? Is there any way CB could play centerfield a couple of games so that Cardinals could get an extra bat in the lineup?

Who's the bat you are referring to?

They would have the DH so no Adams.

The bench consists of Wigginton, Descalso, Robinson, and Cruz.

You would be correct and with Adams as the DH, there is no bat on the bench, unless you contend that Descalso occasionally shocks the opponent with a line drive in the gap. This is why I'd like to see St. Louis try to get a Dobbs from Miami or any quality pinch hitter from anywhere for that matter. Wonder what it would cost to get Ibanez from Seattle?

They have made it abundantly clear that Beltran will not be playing any CF except in the most dire of emergencies.

I think you could get Descalso in there over Kozma, whereas I'd rather have Jon Jay over Wigginton or Robinson or the aforementioned Kozma.

With the DH, and thus no pinch-hitting for the pitcher, the only things the bench is needed for are platoon advantage (Robinson for Jay), pinch-running (again, Robinson), and defensive replacement (Robinson in the corner, Descalso for Freese).

Taveras!

Who took himself out of the game the other day when his ankle started hurting again.  I'm sorry, but this guy is starting to turn into J.D. Drew, and while he may yet have a decent major league career, I don't think he's the answer in CF (Pham, OTOH, could be) and his lack of progress this year may entice the Cards into going ahead and making that qualifying offer to Beltran for one more season.

I too am getting nervous about Taveras, but find it sort of funny to claim Pham is a more likely 'answer'.  Pham may be tough and willing to play through whatever he can, but he is a poster boy for the guy who can't stay in the lineup.

One turned ankle and he's JD Drew??

This tweet was sent out before Taveras left the game:

Tonite is Taveras' 15th game since 4-week stay on DL. He is clearly bothered by ankle. — Joe Strauss (@JoeStrauss)

Then this happened:

Taveras slams helmet on bench after scoring on Peterson HR. Appears to have aggravated ankle injury. — Joe Strauss (@JoeStrauss)

Sounds like the opposite of Drew, in that he was playing through the pain.

I'm not so sure.  He's been acting like Harper, in the sense that he's been timid about getting back into the lineup, complaining that he doesn't feel right.  That month off he took doesn't help my perception.  Seems to me he still has considerable growing up to do.

(Doesn't help that I just got done re-reading 60 feet, 6 inches, in which Gibson and Jackson talk about playing through pain.)

Last night in the Memphis game, Pham and Chambers collided going after the fly ball.  Pham got up immediately.  Chambers sat on the ground for a couple of minutes.

Like I said, tough and willing to play through whatever he can.  I hope his bad luck with injuries is over, but this year is more of the same so far.
