newspaper said starting pitchers are Travis Wood and Shelby Miller.  Wrong?  Also says game is on ESPN in addition to Fox Sports Midwest.  Sorry, sorry, I got the wrong game.  My bad.

Assume all the storms and rain have left the metropolitan St. Louis area?  Its currently sunny and mild in SW Indiana.

Now we are calling for weather reports at 10:30 AM RB? You should friend Bree Smith on Facebook. She is a local weather reporter in St.Louis and does a great job of giving reports via social media.

She is certainly a sweetheart. Married and now pregnant though. She is a fantastic weather person though. Probably will eventually move to a bigger market.

Dayley for Oberkfell was one of Whitey's good deals. Like most GMs, he had some good ones, and some lousy ones.

My brother never forgave Whitey for trading Ted Simmons, and signing Darrell Porter.  He still holds that against Whitey to this day.

I wouldn't be opposed to this thread being turned into a pre-game babe thread.

The weather girl was enough for me, but I'm not exactly a spring chicken.  A word of warning, though.  Be prepared for pugs to do some PBP.

Rizzo is on the bench tonight for Chicago. Dale decided he needed a day off to rest after what has been a prolonged slump.

Simmons was my favorite Cardinal in the '70s, so I never liked that deal either. I thought it would be fun to go into the 1981 season with both Rollie Fingers and Bruce Sutter in our bullpen.

I did think that maybe it would be a good one in the long run as we got a highly touted prospect in David Green, but he never did realize his potential.

And like your brother, I was not a big fan of Darrell Porter although he was great in the '82 post season and was a solid catcher for us during that time so I ended up being okay with things as they played out.

Dale is an idiot and I hope he's just keeping the seat warm for a real manager when the Cubs are ready to compete.  Rizzo is 3 for 6 against Wainwright.  It's bad enough that DeJesus (.391 in 23 ABs against) is on the DL.  Ransom who is filling in at 1B has a .293 AVG and 1.111 OPS against lefties, .154 and .395 against righties.  Meanwhile, Castro is limping toward 300 straight games without a day off.  Bad bullpen management by this guy all year and both Castro and Rizzo have regressed under his watch.

Matheny hasn't always been stellar with his bullpen, but then the bullpen hasn't exactly been our strong suit either so who knows.

Katie, do you think the Cubs should have hired Ryne Sandberg instead of taking the "interim" tag off of Mike Quade? I thought they made a big mistake in passing on Sandberg, but then he still hasn't gotten a big league job so who knows. Maybe he'll be the Phillies manager in 2014 though.

Not meaning to dump on the Cubs, but the manager of a bad team seldom looks good. Anybody you can name would be taking hits in the job.

Sandberg had helped develop a lot of the Cubs young players in the minors, including Castro and Barney as well as some who haven't come up yet, so yeah I thought now was a good time to give him a shot.  Plus, he led several teams in the system to championship finals and won PCL manager of the year.  He did the same for the Iron Pigs (Phillies AAA team) for the first time in their history.  The prevailing opinion is that they didn't want to taint his HOF reputation with a team expected to lose a lot of games, that managers are hired to be fired, etc.  He's probably next in line to take over for Charlie Manuel when he retires, which shouldn't be long from now like you mention.

All that said, I'm starting to wonder if the team right now couldn't use a veteran manager, one who isn't learning on the job like Sveum is.  Someone who knows how to handle a pitching staff and young players at the same time.
