Going to miss this game.  I am going to Kansas City on Sunday.  I will be attending the Cards/Royals game on Monday.

Was surprised MM"s comments in article online post dispatch that they needed to rush a reliever up today because of how the bullpen was burned up yesterday. I understand Kelley is a no go but:

1. Martinez they have not used back to back yet, but if they are going to the time is now after yesterday's outing, he was sharp, low pitch count.

2. Choate, Maness, Boggs - went Fri and Sat - but have not pitched much for several days before that.

I would think everyone would be "hot" (available) today except Kelly.

Unless it is to bring up Wacha and let him relieve on his normal start day today, get his feet wet in the bigs then get his first start later this week to replace Gast.

Looks like it could be Blazek as an immediate add to the pen. That would not preclude Wacha (or another starter) coming up when Gast's turn comes back around.

Edit; Blazek move confirmed. To wear #67. Gast to DL.

I have some hopes for this game. We don't do well against slop-throwing lefties (see: Lilly, Ted) but do reasonably well, if memory serves, against the power lefties. If Kershaw is smart, he'll throw us a lot of changeups and off-soeed breaking stuff.

Going to need a big effort from Miller. Has Blazek already arrived?

Jerry, Blazek is getting the call from AA - he was in Springfield yesterday. And Memphis is now back home for a homestand done going thru Tacoma and Salt Lake City.

Yes, I changed my post when I realized Blazek had been recalled from Springfield and not Memphis.  I didn't know they had a red-eye flight from Springfield to Los Angeles. tongue

In light of what happened yesterday, the decision to pull Lynn after only 77 pitches seems even worse.
Success today will not be determined by the final score, but by how many of our pitchers do or do not end up on the DL!

So far:

1. interesting fact Scully shared - this is the first time since 1991 that this late into season both starting pitches enter a game with era below 1.74 or less.

2. Shelby trying to throw more breaking balls early today, in previous starts he was all fastball first time thru order

3. With Crawford on really notice more of a slide step than against SD when they ran easily on him.

4. With Shelby's K at bat that is with 19 plate app. he has k'd 14 times and has 5 sac - between him and Lynn the pitchers really are bad in the box this year.

5. Kozma hit was the exact same ball down the line that gets by Uribe today and Punto made a great stop on yesterday.

Lynn was pulled for precautionary reasons - hamstring. Said to be good to go for his next start on Wednesday.

Miller 77 pitches thru 4th leads 3-2 but you have think 1 best case 2 innings left in him.

He has really labored today, but he deserves credit for battling and limiting the damage.

Miller's velocity has really taken a drop in the 6th inning. Wondering if he's just worn out or something worse?

..and that was with our number 3 and 4 hitters going 0 for 9, each leaving 4 on. But our boy Pete picked us up from the number 8 slot with an impressive box score line: 4-2-4-3.

Pete had dropped into the .250s not long ago, but is back up to .278 after today's game.

Re: 2013 MLB game 49 thread: Cards at Dodgers: Sun 5/26

I think what we saw out of Rosie today is an example of why I think we will not see him back into the rotation anytime ( next couple of years) soon. He is to valuable as the 8th inning guy this year and I think this is just a preamble for him being the future closer.

Love what Mujica has accomplished, and we need to ride him as long as we can, but I think his current run is a lot like Salas a couple of years ago when Salas ran off 24-25 saves before he became ineffective. Do not see Mujica doing this over the long term.

.339 obp too

he's not a bad player... i do wonder how ryan jackson would do (plus what our trade options would be), but kozma with that obp is a solid player imo...

Yeah, he's a very good role player and is perfect for this team as we do not need much offense at that position. We need a guy who makes the plays, and who occasionally picks up the lower end of the order.

He gets on base enough to keep the order turning over, and is steady in the field.
