Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

Carlos Beltran;
I'm starting to think the Cards should re-sign Beltran..

Obviously, "we" have to see how this season plays out,
and yes Cards would have to determine if Oscar T can play as good as Beltran (to not resign Carlos),
but (BUT) the Cards hot start would not have been accomplished without the play of Carlos Beltran........

I know the pitching is a major difference, but Carlos is the only player who has legit power stats and he seems to get hits when no one else is hitting.....nice security blanket....and hope he doesn’t slow as the season gets longer…..

obviously, Oscar T would have to proficient at CF to make this work (with Carlos remaining in RF)

RE: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

I think it is too early to think about re-signing Beltran. Goold keeps gushing about how much Beltran wants to stay in STL. I love Beltran on the Cardinals and I think when he is healthy he is better than we can realistically count on Taveras or Adams being, especially in their rookie/sophomore year. If at the end of the season Beltran is healthy and one of the either Taveras or Adams is for some reason not going to be available to at the start of 2014 (God forbid), then re-signing Beltran becomes a priority for me. But if all three are healthy and effective, I have a hard time imagining how playing time could be split up between them.

21st Century postseason wins:
St. Louis(56),NYY(51),BOS(45),SFG(33),PHI(27),DET(25),LAA(21),TEX(18),ARI(16),LAD(14),TB-ATL-HOU-OAK(13),CHW(12),FLA(11),COL-CLE(8),MIL-MIN(6),CHC(6),NYM(6),SEA(4),PIT-BAL(3),CIN-WAS(2),SD(1),TOR-KC(0)

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE that you used the word "re-sign" correctly... Great work.

i think the best we can hope for is Beltran plays well enough and stays healthy enough that the Cards are willing to offer him arbitration knowing they he most likely wont accept and that they get a draft pick.    I don't see him signing for 2/16 or 2/20 just because he likes it here and I dont see the team signing him for 1 year over the arbitration amount.   They might be willing to risk that he accepts a one year arbitration deal though.

A cool $14.2M deal if it comes to pass too.

RE: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

Thus far in his two seasons in Cardinal red, Carlos has been an absolute one man wrecking crew at the plate...pre-all-star break. I would like to see how he fares in the second half of this season before entertaining any notions of an extension. At his age and in his physical condition, we could be looking at a player with just a half tank of gas to start a new season. Boy but what a 1/2 tank it is! Do you think Carlos might bite on ML baseball's first 1/2 year contract?

Looks like it could be sort of a "Pujols Jr" situation. We all want Beltran back, but within some limits.

Ironically Beltran would not even be here had we signed Pujols.

Next year we could have four players vying for three positions. (Beltran, Taveras, Craig, and Adams for RF, CF, and 1B). Someone will be the odd man out. I am assuming that will be Beltran.

Are the any certainties that OT will produce at the level Beltran is currently? And yes there is a risk that Beltran will not produce at his current rate this time next season where ever he is at..

I would rather the team hedges it bets and uses OT in CF for a season or two IF he can handle it defensively. And spend the money on Beltran and create a ton of depth. That would push Jay back to a 4th OF a role I think he is best suited for long term..

They will not sign Beltran so forget it. They are going to clear out payroll by dropping Carpenter, Furcal, Westbrook and Beltran.

The nathan we know and love - and is consistently wrong - is back!

Re: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

my bet is Cards sign (re-sign)
Beltran 1 + 1 (1 years = 1 year, club option)
and up the amount over $8Mill....

with David Frees time running low there is no way the cards would have replaced Alberts bat without Carlos...and when Carlos leave, the Albert viod will continue....

I doubt Oscar T & Adams combo can replace Carlos, certainly short term...

but if Carlos closes slow (like last season) well, father time passes on and so will the Cards....

Re: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

Normally, I just ignore Nathan, but in this case he's probably right with at least 3 of the 4.  I wouldn't bring back Furcal at least at a higher contract amount, Westbrook don't think they will sign, and Carpenter will either be retired or?  I just can't see him being effective for a full season as a starter.  I suspect he's trying to earn his paycheck, but am having a hard time thinking he's gonna try next year unless he... might have a role as a setup/closer for a while if Motte or Rosenthal aren't available.

Rosenthal because he might be a starter at that time, or "too valuable) and in the pen as set-up/closer.

What about Mujica? Does he come back?

Re: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

Absolutely we bring Mujica back.  As far as I'm concerned the only question mark is Beltran.  I think we should bring him back but if management sees differently because of money, so be it.  We can figure something out in Beltran's stead to get the production.  Possibly Craig in right, Tavares in Center, Adams in first and Jay being a really good fourth outfielder would replace the run production just having Tavares and Adams every day.

Why would Beltran sign that contract?

Re: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

I think there have to be some conditions for bringing Beltran back:

1) He doesn't get hurt for a significant period of time this year.
2) He doesn't wear down as we get deeper into the year.
3) He's willing to come back on a 1 year deal, or a 1 year deal with a team/mutual option, for decreased money.
4) He's willing to take a decreased role going forward.
5) He's willing to tutor Taveras as his role decreases.

If ALL of those things aren't a yes, I don't think we re-sign him.

Re: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

They will make the one year qualifying offer that they made to Lohse.  (Technically this is not arbitration)  My thinking is that Beltran will take it.  No way they offer two years with the CBA giving them the power with that qualifying offer.

RE: Carlos Beltran; Cards should re-sign Beltran

I was thinking the same thing.  Obviously, Carlos has to finish this season with some good numbers, but if he does that, I'd gladly take 1 more year of Carlos OR a compensation pick in the draft.
