Non-game day thread: Thu 5/9

We'll try this again. With no Cardinals game today, this is for whatever topics you'd like to discuss that fall short of warranting their own threads.

Here's one. A TLR flashback from the Yankees' Joe Girardi last night, having his pitcher hit eighth.

Joe must not have listened when he talked to TLR about it. A game plan that hopes your catcher will get on to clog up the basepath ahead of your leadoff man is not very Tony-like.

Here is a fun site, tracking MLB TOOTBLANs = Thrown Out On The Basepaths Like A Nincompoop. The Cardinals lead MLB this season with 19, just ahead of Milwaukee and Houston.

I hadn't realized that the concept of the TOOTBLAN arose as part of the effort to create the 'Ryan Theriot Adjusted On Base Percentage'.

The main thing on my mind is we need more at bats for Matt Adams.

And is Molina ever going to have another day off? What is the record for games started in a year by a catcher? Yadier is on track for 161 I think.

He will get one soon enough. The 2 off days this week mitigated the need for the present.

I thought McCarver in 1964 might have been a possibility, but he only started 126 games behind the plate that year - Uecker started the other 36.  He started 138 games at catcher in 1966 (1965 had him on the DL for a while so I didn't consider that one) with Corrales starting 24.  That appears to have been his peak.

Which All Star would you like him to replace?

Adams will get his AB's. He's a great asset to have off the bench to PH and in interleague. Beltran will get a day or so off a week. So don't worry my friend!biggrin

No, he's right to worry.  Adams will not improve playing one or two days a week.  He should have stayed in Memphis where he could play six day a week.  Then next year with Beltran gone Adams plays first and Craig right.  He will stagnate watching the season on the bench.

Ted Simmons in 1973 played 151-153 games at catcher. 161 total. Also, again in 1975, he played 148-154 games at catcher, 157 total.

Carlton Fisk played 150-151 games at catcher in both 1977 and 1978.

Gary Carter played 152 at catcher in 1978 and 153 in 1982 at catcher.

In 1968, Johnny Bench played 154 games at catcher.

Definitely seems to be stagnating so far.

If Adams replaces Craig, Holliday, Beltran, and pinch hits, he will get more than one or two days a week.

The chance of Beltran, Craig and Holliday all staying healthy all year is not too good IMO, so I wouldn't worry about Adams getting ABs. In the mean time, there is no alternative bat off the bench if he were in Memphis.

Didn't Randy Hundley catch most every game for the Cubs during the years Leo Durocher was managing them? I think he played 160 one year.

Beltran will probably be gone next year. But I wonder how much we're going to miss him. He has been carrying the ball club for the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure any of the guys who might be replacing him will be capable of that yet.

I would love to work out another two-year deal with Beltran. He'll most likely be ready to sign with an AL team for 2014 and beyond though - maybe he will be the wayward son who returns to his family after wandering around the major leagues for all these years and end up back in Kansas City.

And we might actually be worse off with him next year as there are younger guys waiting in the wings that look to be sources of talent. It looks like Adams is ready to play full time, although we would have a better idea of that if he played more or got a full season in Memphis this year. And there is always Carpenter, who could probably play first or the outfield if Wong is the right guy for second next year. But then we might need Carpenter at third, as Freese does not look like a guy who will age well in his career due to nagging injuries.

Someone named Oscar might be in the outfield next year.

I think we could end up with a 1 year deal with carlos if we offer him arbitration, but i don't see a 2 year deal with Taveras and adams being the other options.

Honestly I don't see us not offering Beltran arbitration and i don't see him accepting it.  He's too good of a hitter not to get a 2-3 year contract for 10-12 from somebody and he'd be an idiot to take that over a 1-year shot for 13 or so from us...  unless he REALLY wants to win and even then there will be other options.   That would be the only caveat i can think of.

I don't believe any our young talent will be capable of carrying the club like Beltran has been lately. They might be able to some day, but I don't think they could do it yet. But then we have to make the transition sometime, and next year will almost certainly be the year. I'm going to miss Carlos Beltran. That guy is poetry in motion when he's on his game.

Same here. He's got about as sweet of a swing both lefty and righty as any player I recall. And his power is effortless. He takes the same swing, and sometimes it's a single and sometimes it jumps off his bat and clears the fence.

So far, 1 1/4 years in, we could not have asked for a much better outcome than we've gotten from the "let's pass on Pujols" decision. Beltran even for two years has been great to watch, plus Wacha, plus tons of cash.
