David Price

Mlb trade rumors with a Buster Onley quote saying the Cardinals could blow everyone away with a deal.

If it didn't include Tavarez It would be an interesting partner. However contract status as always is an issue. Would be a blockbuster for sure.

RE: David Price

Only two problems with Olney's piece. First, he admits that Price is not even on the market. Second, since the player is not on the market, Olney has to make an "educated guess" (his own words) which teams might be interested IF the player is made available.

He offers absolutely no insight on why the Cardinals would be interested in Price. In other words, it is a totally hypothetical scenario with no obvious substance behind it.

The worst part will be when people overreact for months as if this is an actual rumor versus a completely made up idea (see Taveras for Profar).

RE: David Price

I look at these so-called rumors as a gambit by one of the teams involved. For example, Tampa Bay needs to trade Price at some point during the next year or so, in order to free up payroll. They drop a hint to someone like Olney so that he writes about it and gets people talking. To suggest the Cardinals would be interested seems plausible because St. Louis has prospects that the Rays would be interested in. This plausibility gives the rumor legs. What I'm saying is that Olney is not just fabricating a story in order to have something to write about. He's being used, willingly, to foster interest in a trade and get people talking.

This pretty much sums it up perfectly: http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/20...-rumors-doctors

I also heard on Sunday morning's addition of baseball tonight either Jayson Stark or Olney (can't remember which one it was) speculate that we will be a player for Giancarlo Stanton.  I think it's time people realize that Mozeliak is committed to building through the farm, and not willing to swap players in less it's for a need.  We Cardinals fans might as well get used to hearing bogus rumors of our interest in some of the top available players though just b/c of the depth and quality of our current farm system

You got it. And the frustrating part is as Brian points out, these outlandish speculations are taken seriously by many fans and the talk about them escalates to the point of absurdity.

It seems like something has to give. Our major league roster is already full and we have Taveras, Wong, Wacha, and              C. Maritnez up and coming fast, with G. Garcia and Gast looking more and more like they belong in the Major Leagues....and there are others.

Re: David Price

This one is truly absurd.  The depth of Olney's knowledge is seriously in question by him even speculating/musing on this one.  Yes, St. Louis' system is loaded.  But any GM that wants to keep their job long-term doesn't trade the wealth for stuff they don't need.

Agree...

Howver, if all of our prospects live up the their absolute upside we could field a competitive team from mostly our system. What exactly does that give us (fans)? A cheap team with some flexibility going forward? That really just helps the owners.

In reality some of our prospects will fourish, some wont. While we have the leverage it seems to make sense to use it to make our club better, and spend some "dry powder" in the process.

Taveras as a piece here imo makes little sense unless it involves a cheaper extention included with price in the deal, and I cant see any reason why he would be willing to do that at this point. If the deal includes other prospects, im all for it.

RE: David Price

The Cardinals will always be tossed in to rumors like this because we have a deep farm, a GM who never rules anything out, and a perpetual desire to improve ourselves. We're often, on the surface, a club that fits nicely into hypothetical situations like this.

Let's see how that shakes out in June. Right now it looks decent.

RE: David Price

First Olney ties the Cardinals to a trade for Giancarlo Stanton and then to a trade for David Price. I can see how that makes sense.

The Cardinals trade Miller, Wacha, Martinez, and Adams for Stanton which opens up a need for a starting pitcher so they trade Taveras, Rosenthal, Kelly, and Jenkins for Price.

Awesome!!!

You people are being a little dramatic. Is anyone really suggesting we would trade for both or are they just linked to two separate trade possibilities? Taveras, Miller and Wacha should be untouchable. Now if they could make something work with a combo of the other guys Oqie mentioned i think you have to kick the tires. To me Price is the more likely of the two but i still think he ends up in New York. A package of Adams, Martinez, Jenkins and Kelly is reasonable but would probably be overbid.

GO CARDS!

No one is being dramatic.  We just are marveling that people take this nonsense seriously.  Buster Olney makes sh*t up to get attention, as does a lot of these media guys.

RE: David Price

Olney's job is to create traffic ("buzz" as they say) for his employer. The Cardinals' job is to provide a quality product within their budgetary limitations.

Sometimes those two goals do not intersect, which is the case here.

Developing... Cards may be in mix for a trade for Johnny Bench... Deep farm system enables them to offer Skip Jutze, Jorge Roque and Santiago Guzman....

Think the Reds want Tim Conroy and Hector Cruz too.
