I was traveling. You should have posted the news (about Motte, not me being in the car)! ;-)

Elbow is almost always a bad sign, whether now or eventually. Glad he only got a two-year deal now. Cardinals have the depth to overcome this loss. But this loss also affects are depth.

as long as motte returns to form after the injury, I think this is great!!!  very excited to hear matheny say Rosenthal will be the 8th inning guy.

Re: Jason Motte injury

Damn, should have pulled the trigger on that Motte for Porcello thing. wink This does not really worry me though b/c i have thought all along that Boggs is a better pitcher than Motte anyways. He will need to finally step up here though unlike 3 years ago when he blew that one save against Houston and was demoted. Question is does Motte get the closer role when he comes back or is he just another late bullpen arm?

Re: Jason Motte injury

i don't think one should lose their position due to injury.  hoping boggs is lights out, but motte should be given chance to reclaim closer role when he's healthy.

RE: Jason Motte injury

Motte won't lose his position as closer when he comes back unless Boggs is lights out Rivera in October good.

Sorry to disagree, CNH. Motte is a proven closer.....and a darn good one. Boggs is....what is Boggs? I thought he finally had a real nice 2012 campaign, but he's accomplished nothing close to what Motte has.

Re: Jason Motte injury

If Motte's injury really is only a minor muscle strain and he can come back full strength, the silver lining to this is that if Boggs shows that he can close effectively, then his trade value would go up considerably. If we want to trade him then, and if Porcello is still available, Detroit would have to listen. IMO Boggs' pitches do have more movement than Motte's pitches.

Re: Jason Motte injury

If Boggs ends up being half the hurler that Motte is, then I'll be a happy camper. Last year was a very encouraging one for Boggsy...it'll be very interesting to see how he fares this year. If he takes any kind of a step back whatsoever, his stock will take a huge hit. With all of the young pitching talent we have, I'd trade him in a flash if anything remotely resembling a good deal presented itself.

He has more than one pitch.

Re: Jason Motte injury

Of course, if Motte's injury is more serious than they're letting on, that increases the chance that Trevor Rosenthal stays in the bullpen instead of moving back into the rotation. wink

You realize Motte has more than 1 pitch. He throws 3 different fastballs. In fact Motte throws his 4 seamer just as much as Boggs throws his sinker.

That is true about the 4 seam FB, he did use it a lot last year. Maybe what i should have said was he has a breaking ball unlike Motte. I do not consider the four seamer to be a breaking pitch. Many do not realize that Boggs has better stuff than anyone on the staff with the exception of Garcia. I have always thought he should have been a starter where he can use that great off speed pitch but i guess the team knows better than me. Boggs problems are all about the mental side of the game. He will either be very good or very bad IMO. The good news is that he has started to develop a little more of a mean streak possibly due to spending time with Motte and a higher confidence level.

Re: Jason Motte injury

I believe it's called "experience".  Or, as the cliche goes, he's progressed from being a thrower to being a pitcher.  Motte, FWIW, has made the same kind of progression; they were talking about it on the Mets broadcast the other day, how when Motte first came up he was strictly a fire-it-in-there kind of guy but is a much better pitcher now.
