Rick Porcello thread
Ken Rosenthal says that Detroit's Rick Porcello may be on the trade block. He also noted the Cardinals were one of a number of clubs to have scouted Porcello's last start. Rosenthal also said the Cardinals are NOT looking for starting pitching at this time. That has not stopped the fanning of flames of speculation by some that the Cards may be after Porcello. The fact they regularly scout other clubs and could have been looking at any number of players is lost in the new excitement. For what it is worth, Rosenthal argues that Porcello may have a breakout season coming and the Tigers should not trade him.

Re: Rick Porcello thread
How about Boggs for Porcello, and then Lynn for a shortstop?
(not advocating, just throwing it out there for discussion)

Re: Rick Porcello thread
I like Boggs and I think that would be a fair trade. But I don't think it will happen because Boggs has never received the hype that Porcello has. How the trade is perceived has as much do with it happening as the fairness of it in some cases.
If we had Porcello it would surely free us up for doing something else. Tulowitzki is probably going to be traded at some point because Colorado needs to free up some money for other needs, and the way his contract is back loaded, its probably going to happen this year or next. We're one of the few teams that may be willing to take on his big contract so there is a match there. If it ever does happen, I just hope our front office takes into consideration that his high contract will mean sacrifices later on for us, and we don't overpay in terms of prospects. If this trade doesn't happen, that's okay, too. We've been hearing good things about G. Garcia for a couple of years now, and I'm anxious to see what he can do at the major league level. Picture Garcia or Kozma playing well at $500,000 and all of our primo pitching still in the organization, as opposed to Tulo out there hogging 20M a year for himself. Its not a bad picture although I'd still take Tulo for the right price in prospects.

(not advocating, just throwing it out there for discussion) I bet the Tigers are more interested in a player that could be a closer like Motte or Rosenthal.

I think you're right. But I don't believe either of those guys will be traded. In fact, IMO the possibility of that happening is next to nothing. Boggs might be as good as Motte at closing if given a chance, but the Tigers would likely want a closer that has already proven that he can do it.

Re: Rick Porcello thread
The Cardinals have been linked to Norris, Harrell, and now Porcello. They claim publicly that they are satisfied with their internal options, so why all of the rumors? Must be just a slow news day.

Re: Rick Porcello thread
It definitely seems like they want someone capable of closing " According to Tigers source the Padres have turned down Porcello for Street and Porcello for Gregorson but talks continue"Link
I'd imagine if Gregerson (Bowden being the great reporter he is, spelled it wrong) would get it done, Boggs could probably get it done as well. I still don't really see why it's necessary.

Porcello is not in Wainwright's class, but they might be interesting in any fairly low risk, potentially high reward guy just in case they cannot work out anything with AW.

RE: Rick Porcello thread
If it was the Padres that turned down Gregerson for Porcello straight up that means the Tigers would be willing to trade Porcello for a set up man. Boggs for Porcello could definitely happen. Do that and put Rosenthal in the 8th inning role maybe?

RE: Rick Porcello thread
Wacha might be able to handle the eighth, too. At lease it seemed that way during ST.

RE: Rick Porcello thread
Wacha is a starter and needs to get his innings in. Maybe at the end of the year they bring him up to be in the BP.

Re: Rick Porcello thread
Assuming Martinez is in the U.S. Perhaps if he has a successful season between Springfield and Memphis could potentially see a high leveraged bullpen role down the stretch similar to that of Rosenthals last year.

RE: Rick Porcello thread
If the Cardinals do have real interest in Porcello what would the reason be? Not confident in our number 5 starter? Or maybe are worried about what they have seen out of Lynn this year also.
Boggs for Porcello is fair.

Re: Rick Porcello thread
If you are suggesting Boggs and Lynn for Porcello, I see at least one problem. I don't think Detroit has a ss that would fit our needs. Others may have other problems with that idea as well. For example, Lynn's value might not be very high right now. Jmodene1 wrote:How about Boggs for Porcello, and then Lynn for a shortstop?

Re: Rick Porcello thread
I think the Cards would throw Cleto into a package that centered on 1 or 2 other players, but that might not entice Detroit. Actually they could use Boggs as a closer. I'm not advocating a trade for Porcello, but if we really wanted/needed him, Boggs and Adams might come close. PadsFS wrote:

RE: Rick Porcello thread
Boggs alone would get Porcello. Remember the Tigers already offered Porcello for Street straight up and Porcello for Gregerson straight up. It was the Padres that turned down each trade.
