Allen Craig contract extension

The Cardinals have reached an agreement with Allen Craig on 5-year contract through the 2017 season plus a club option for 2018.

People on Twitter going nuts about impact on Matt Adams. That makes no sense. Craig was already under team control for the next four years. Adams is no more or less blocked today than yesterday.

This could end up being the deal of the century....though we're just over 12 years into it. Conversely, our team could end up getting buschwacked(no pun intended) if injury should riddle this rising bird.

If he gives you 130 games on average that's still a steal.

He gave us 119 last season even missing the first 30 games of the season, meaning he only missed 13 games from May 1 on.

Wow, I'm shocked at how much he is getting this season. That's pretty unusual.

Wainwright is the only comparable though (getting a pre-arb season bought out) and he got $1.25M.

Molina ($2M - 1st yr), Garcia ($3.75 - 1st yr), and Pujols ($7M - 1st yr) all started thier extensions on thier "1st Arb" season.

Yes, but none of them were rated MLB Network's 6th best major league first baseman. wink

That means he gets his big raise just as Garcia's buyout comes into play.  This is a very good deal for the Cardinals.

I figured if Craig had a good 2013 they would try to buy out his arb year and maybe a year of FA.. But this was an under the radar move by Mo... Cost certainty at its finest... Dont blame Craig for wanting some security..

I think this looks like an awesome deal.  Mo added to his list of great pre-free agent contract extensions of young core players.  I think Craig is a $20MM/year player in free agency so we're getting a steal in exchange for Craig being guaranteed a multi-millionaire.  I also don't worry much about his health status as long as he doesn't go running into any more walls.  It's not like he naturally has bad ankles like Freese (which I'm glad it looks like we're going year to year with him).

RE: Allen Craig contract extension

Excellent deal for the Cardinals. They lock up Craig through his 33rd birthday, what should be the prime of his career, for an AAV of ~$6 million. Not much risk in him being no better than a ~1 WAR per year player over that span.

This appears to be a textbook example of the kind of risk/reward balance deals the FO should likely look to make with Freese and other college draftee/late bloomer types.  When these guys make it to the majors at 25, 26, 27 and prove to be solid ML starters, one multi-year contact can lock them up for the portion of their career when you want most to own them.

I like this one as well. Keep your core, key contributors through what should be their prime seasons at a reasonable rate. Then fill in where you can with young guys and vets who still have something left.

Another John Sickels "Crazy Prediction" -

"Allen Craig stays healthy enough to play 153 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting .339/.397/.575 with 119 RBI and winning National League MVP."

That qualifies as a best case scenario. If you're good, the batters box is scoring position, but he'll need help from the guys around him in the order.

I dont know about the .339, but I could certainly see him well north of a 900 ops and in mvp contention if healthy.
