After Tuesday's day off, the Cards and Marlins will play a 1 P.M. ET game on Thursday at Roger Dean. After starter Jake Westbrook, Trevor Rosenthal and Eduardo Sanchez are slated to pitch. Miami's pitcher is someone named Tom Koehler.

Glad to see us reaching the point where the starters are being stretched a little bit more.

What a bummer on the radio deal...

Also, has Jackson started a single game at SS?  It's like he's not even in the competition.

Any backfield games today?

Jackson has one start, at 1B in game 4 vs. Red Sox on 2/26. No "B" game today.

Taveras two-run homer puts Cards up 2-0 in B2nd.

Rosenthal should be coming in soon. Hope we can find out how he does.

Westbrook allowed a run in T3rd, but Holliday added a two-run shot of his own to dead CF. 4-1 Cards in B3rd.

BJ Rains mentioned Westbrook is getting a lot of fly balls so far, which of course is not what he is typically looking for. Is this just Jake's second appearance - the first being the last game against Miami where he got hurt?

Correct.

Westbrook went three innings: 4 hits, 1 ER, 2 Ks. 40 pitches/26 strikes. Bottom line looks ok.

Jake may have been working on pitches, explaining the uncharacteristic fly balls.

Which would make sense since his first start was cut short due to the injury and he hasn't had any other work.

With every homer by Taveras also comes a reminder that he is still rough defensively. Rosenthal gave up a leadoff double in T4th that Oscar misplayed into a triple, but Rosenthal did good job in stranding the runner.

In the 5th, Rosenthal gave up a double, then hit a batter. Old friend Donovan Solano obliged with an inning-ending DP.

Rosenthal finished his two innings with two hits, both for extra bases, no walks or runs and one strikeout.

Sanchez adds a 1-2-3 6th, including a strikeout.

Kozma is 1-2, avg. at .417. He seems to be picking up where he left off. He just can't be as bad as he was in the minors, can he?

I have a theory on Kozma. The organization pushed him too fast allowing him to advance before he had mastered a previous level. His numbers looked horrible throughout his MILB time and that shook his confidence. When he was called up last year he realized that he really could play baseball and he got his confidence back.

He was a 1st round draft pick after all even if he was a stretch at that pick he was still highly rated and out of HS. These types take awhile to develop.

Hmmm.......2 innings is all? Are they no longer stretching him out to start?

Wisdom in big boy game at 3B. Jackson also in at short. Siegrist fans three in T7th, but also gave up a solo HR. 4-2 Cards.

StL gets run back. Towles walks, but is picked off before 2Bman Cedeno homers to left-center. Lead back to 3 at 5-2 going into 8th.

Fornataro faces four batters in T8th. Just one hit.

Long blast by Adams increases lead to 6-2 in B8th. Johnson adds a solo homer.

Blazek fanned one in the T9th as the game ends 7-2.

If lack of mastery at one level caused his problems at the next level, he would have had the same problem at the major league level.   Just what type is that again?

Not necessarily. People develop late often. Holliday was a slow developer. Also confidence is an issue. His initial success on the MLB level could have given him the confidence to believe in his talents and play free and easy rather than to play tight.

I find this strange. How can you pick 5th starter when two of the candidates have only pitched in 1 game?
