Re: Shortstop?
I think Jim Edmunds should play SS, maybe we'll go and sign Mark McGuire out of retirement. If they don't work out maybe we can trade John Gall for Troy Tolitski

Re: Shortstop?
It would be great if we could have done a little skip schumachker magic and signed ryan ludwig as a SS just to get that bat in the lineup for 2013...

Re: Shortstop?
Why don't we see if we can get David Eckstein to come out of retirement?
I sure would like to find out the real truth as to why Jackson isn't getting any love. Can he play or not?
I saw recently that the Rangers are looking for a utility infielder. Lets see now. They need a pitcher, a hitter to help cover for the loss of Hamilton, and now we find out, a utility infielder. Too bad they don't have anything to trade.

Re: Shortstop?
I started the thread in part because I've always been somewhat of a Cedeno fan. I'm not sure why, as I have no statistical basis for it; I've just always liked the way he's a lithe and athletic shortstop with good speed. He's probably never put up any big numbers with the bat, but I seem to remember him as an aggressive hitter who goes up to the plate with an idea. Maybe he could blossom, finally reach his potential. It's been known to happen.

Stranger things have happened. Some don't finally blossom until their mid-thirties...see Marco Scutaro. Something better blossom on that 2013 Cardinal mid-infield or this team will be in trouble. The most logical possible occurrence would be for Wong to seize control of that 2nd base job. And for those that think that even if he looks good in Spring training, it's just too early in his career to rush him along...it could hamper the lad in the long run...I say poppycock!! From a physical, intellectual and psychological aspect, how much more difficult is to play QB in the NFL vs. 2nd base in MLB? 10 times? 20 times? At least that much. Look at how this year's rookie Big 3 (Luck, RG3 and Russell Wilson) fared. If you do bring up a young player in what later proves to be too early and the experience destroys the player, then that player never had what it took in the first place to make it.

Re: Shortstop?
Rick Hummel reported in an interview with Cedeno that St. Louis was the only organization that expressed an interest in him. It will be interesting to see if he can turn his career around this year. If he can't, then we gambled away over a million dollars on him.

Cedeno actually admitted that to Hummel? We either have one very very honest new player on our hands.....or one dumber than a doorknob?

Re: Shortstop?
If folks just check the other thread on this page called "Cardinals interested in SS Ronny Cedeno," you can read the comment. There is also a link to the full story.

Reminds of their 2001, 2002 and 2003 prospect classes; ranked 2,1,3 in BA in each respective year. Just about every player flopped.

RE: Shortstop?
Furcal has not thrown from the hole for real yet. So we don't know if he can or what will happen when he does. He will not be ready when games start this weekend. I consider him out of the picture until he proves he is in it. Maybe one of the others will take advantage of the opportunity to step up. (Not Wiggy of course.) I don't have any preference which one.

RE: Shortstop?
Um he was quoted as saying he can do everything except throw hard.

"Um he was quoted as saying he can do everything except throw hard."
I would think that is typical in the case of an injury to the throwing arm.
He will have to be able to throw hard before he is game ready. We will have to see how it goes when he does.

Re: Shortstop?
Eventually, Cedeno may factor in more than we expect right now. Especially if Furcal's shoulder is troublesome.

Re: Shortstop?
The Cardinals had tried to sign Alex Gonzalez earlier in the winter, but he turned them down for more guaranteed money from Milwaukee.
