Carlos Martinez held up by visa issues

Carlos Martinez held up by visa issues

The Cardinals beat writer Jennifer L, tweeted that the Cardinals aren't sure how long Carlos Martinez will be help up by visa issues?  Can someone inform me about this because he has played in the United States for the last 2 seasons.  Why would there be an issue with him getting into the country now?

Why is Cedeno delayed? It just happens with some guys across baseball every year. Maybe they don't apply soon enough, who knows? Hardly of great concern unless it drags out.

I'm not concerned with Cedeno you at all. It was her wording about the Cardinals being unsure how long it will take to resolve Martinez's visa issue is what concerned me.

IIRC, work visas are only good for six months (I think they can get a 30-day extension for postseason), so they do have to reapply every year.  And since we're talking about government red tape bureaucracies here, it's no surprise they can't get them all processed in time.

I've seen where the Cards have increased their budget for international operations. A capable person to get this sort of thing handled ahead of time seems like it would be a good investment.

Well, it would take a further investment as bureaucracies in a lot of countries rely on extra compensation to get the paperwork filed.

These issues are always on the US end. The problem is not them getting out of their home countries, but our country allowing them in. This isn't the board to discuss how to improve the efficiency of our government, however! ;-)

P.S. I just saw the MLB.com Mariners beat writer tweet this:

"Two #Mariners not here yet due to visa problems -- catcher Ronny Paulino and pitcher Jhonny Nunez."

Point again being that this is a business-as-usual spring camp aggravation for all 30 organizations.

Tell you what Nunez' visa problem is. They're spelling his first name wrong on his passport. It's "Johnny"....not "Jhonny"....do they even have spelling Bee contests south of the border? Maybe they should consider it.

This might be a really stupid question...but is it even the same name? I mean i would think its the biblical "john" but obviously the H is misplaced.

I have also noticed national reporters and announcers pronouncing jhonny peraltas first name Ja-ha-nee...not -ja-nee as americans would...

Is C-Mart blowing his chance to make a good impression?

Not that a visa problem is all his fault, but the loss of a week of big league camp when he was expected to take another step in development...  Its be very quiet on him other then he was being held up..

Wacha seem to be building a nice buzz... Is he passing C-Mart up?

Not sure about passing up, but it is always better to be in camp than not. Wacha is slated to start in Springfield. Martinez should be ready to move up to Memphis, but worst case, they would probably be in the same rotation to start the year.

Haven't "built a nice buzz" since....well since Wacha's age. Since Wacha's professional career commenced such a short time ago, he's been passing the competition at a faster pace than Usain Bolt. Yes, I think it's reasonable to assume that C-Mart will be looking up at Wacha on the depth chart by sometime next month. I know it's not likely, but the possibility certainty exists that Mr. Wacha may never visit a minor league park ever again.
