RE: Scott Rolen

One of the things you want to have on your bench is a guy you can send up that will instigate a pitching change, get a guy out of the game, get deeper into the pen, get an offensive or defensive standout out of the game by way of double switch, etc. Robinson is not that guy. I'm not sure if Wiggy is, but more so than Robinson at least.

Rolen's career may be over. The Reds announced today that he is not coming back.

There are plenty of 3B options, Rat.  Carpenter, Descalso, Ryan Jackson, and 3B coming out of the ying yang in the minors.  We don't need Scott Rolen.

Perhaps if Freese is out for an extended part of the season, Rolen could become an option. This is just back spasms. Not a huge issue in my opinion. Usually spasms are the result of over-working so that's probably why Freese is hurt.

It's too bad Wigginton is using that final roster spot. Rolen would look a lot better as that 25th guy.

Doesn't Rolen have back issues of his own?

Re: Scott Rolen

From what I've seen of Rolen the last two years, there is nothing left. I wasn't big on signing Wigginton either, but he has more to offer right now than Rolen.

We would all love to see Scott come back, show some of his former skills once more, and wash away the bad feelings from his exit as a Cardinal. But there is nothing left of a once brilliant player.

I agree, bikemike. I sense Rolen's self-defined career limbo - not willing to retire, but not willing to try to play - may parallel what Chris Carpenter is going through.

Rolen 2012 Second Half stats:

.297/.376/.473/.848

With 5 HRs and (for the year) neutral defense according to BR.com and fangraphs, slightly above UZR.

Re: Scott Rolen

For comparison's sake, Freese's 2nd half line was:

.293/.403/.447/.850

with 7 HRs

and for the year: slightly above average defense according to the two websites, but a slightly below average UZR (-0.5)
